A juvenile is defined in Guyana as a child between the ages of 14 and 18 years old. Activities that juvenile delinquent engage in: Gambling (mostly engage in) Use of obscene language Defacing school property Stealing (mostly engage in) Drugs abuse Truancy (mostly engage in) Wandering (mostly engage in) Causes of Juvenile Delinquency Broken family A teen acquires moral and ethical values from his parent and other family member. It goes without saying that the family plays a vital role on shaping a teen’s behavior and grooming his/her personality. However, teens become violent or show signs of juvenile delinquency only when they are facing disturbance at home. Broken or disturbed families with bad relations can cause teens to go astray and become violent. Single parent are often busy working. There they do not spend quality time with their children this causes teens seek attention from others especially their peers. Lack of finance A Young child may lead to a wrong path to improve their financial condition. A child becomes a juvenile delinquent due to the lack of finance. When they experience poor economic activities, they may start selling drugs or steal things to improve their economic condition. Lack of communication Often lack of discourse in the family can lead children to find solace outside their homes. When they are not having any communication with their parents and family members at home, they may lose unity, trust and understanding which can eventually lower their self-esteem. Once they feel their losing, their individuality they tend to do things they shouldn’t do to boost their self- confident. They blindly follow their peer, adopt their unhealthy life styles, they shop lift and consume drugs to look cool in the eyes of their peers. School problems School problem are one of the main cause of juvenile delinquency. There are a variety of reasons related to schooling that can lead a minor to criminal activity. Truancy is one of the main reasons. When a child misses a lot of school they do not reap the benefits of education or learn to discipline of attending school. When a minor struggle to learn or has a parent that is simply not interested in making sure that the child attend school regularly, that child can be approach and corrected and the child can move on to leading a life crime. Discipline has been left completely to the parents as teachers are allowed no latitude, despite the most provoking behavior from trouble maker students who even walk with weapons on threaten other students over trifling incidence. Parents on the other hand can withhold privileges within the home environment. Wandering which is probably specific to Guyana, occur when a child run away from home. Very often this is done continually, and one the reasons is abuse, either, sexual, physical, mental and emotional a combination of two or more of these in the home. Consequences and effects that juvenile delinquency will have on family A parent worst nightmare The parent of a delinquent child suffer in this scenario as well, because no matter how much they disapprove of their delinquent child’s actions they are the one who have to face the law enforcements. Furthermore, deep down they realise that their child turned out this way due to failing parenting, a guilt that they have extremely hard time shaking off. They also have to live with the facts that their child is a criminal and have to bear the look given to them by everyone else. The worst part is that they can’t kick their children out because they still underage and have to remain the custody of their parents. It does not matter how much parent are making their children suffer, they can’t do anything about it because they are bond to take care of them unless they reach the age of 18. It is not a smooth ride by any means but they have to live through it.
