Supplement Protocol Amendment to Add Personnel PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR: PROTOCOL # and TITLE: Federal law requires that the IACUC evaluate the training and qualifications of personnel who intend to use live animals in research or teaching. Federal and state law requires all personnel to be appropriately qualified to conduct work with animals. Personnel must, at a minimum: 1) understand the basic needs of each species they utilize; 2) use proper techniques when handling each species and select methods that minimize animal distress; 3) provide proper pre- and post-procedural care to animals; 4) use aseptic surgical techniques, when applicable; and 5) select and use anesthetics and tranquilizers appropriate for each species, when applicable. Personnel Requirements: In order to be in compliance with IACUC policy, all personnel must obtain IACUC clearance before entering animal facilities or working with animals. Once clearance has been obtained, new personnel and their PI will be notified that they can begin work on the IACUC protocol and that they can request access to the animal facilities, if needed. Clearance has three components. Personnel must: 1. Be listed on the relevant IACUC protocol via the Supplement form. 2. Complete the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) assessment and renew it every year. 3. Complete mandatory IACUC training(s) and renew them every three years: Mandatory Animal Care and Use (MACU) training Rodent Survival Surgical training, if applicable More information on how to complete these requirements can be found here. Training in specific animal procedures is available from the veterinary staff by request. More boxes can be added, if necessary.
