What is Literature?
How is Literature defined?
‘ Written works, e.g. fiction, poetry,
drama, and criticism that are
recognized as having important or
permanent artistic value are referred
to as literature.’
‘ The body of written works of a
culture, language, people, or period of
time is called literature.’
Literature features
human experiences that
are seen as fleeting
moments caught by the
creative eye. (Barnet, et
al., 2003)
Literature develops
people to share a
magnitude of deep
sensibility and
information. (Jocobus,
1996)
Literature further
widens how people
look at the world.
(Meyer, 2006)
Literature illustrates the
richness of human life,
the endless potential, as
well as how profound the
drama of life can be.
(Jocobus, 1996)
Literature moves the
inevitable limitations of
people as culture allows
society to think of
themselves, moving to
places, or those purple
patch moments in life.
(Jocobus, 1996)
Etymology:
The Latin root of
literatura is taken from
littera which means letter
or writing that is shown
through spoken and written
accounts.
What is CANON?
Greek word :
“Measure”,
“Law”,
“Rule”
What is CANON?
A canon is viewed as a set
of authors and their
respective works that are
claimed to be classics. The
best method to evaluate
excellence is how work
stands through time.
What is CANON?
For a work to be canonical, it must
mean that over successive
generations, preferably many
generations, readers continue to
affirm a judgment of greatness,
almost as though each generation
actually judged anew the quality of
the work. (Jocobus, 1996)
Two Major Aspects:
simple
enjoyment and
aesthetic appeal
to the senses
analysis and
exact
description of
the prevailing
condition of
society in
general and
man in
particular
