Straight
Seams
Definition
a technique used to secure the
raw edge of the fabric exposed
within the seam allowance
How
Press seam allowance open with tip
of iron for an inconspicuous
appearance. For some construction
procedures press both edges of seam
to one side. The seam may be
pressed open before turning and
pressing the edges to one side. This
may give a flatter line on some
fabrics.
Lapped
Seams
Definition
a seam in leather or cloth made by
extending a cut or folded edge
over a cut edge to the width of the
seam allowance and stitching in
place
How
Press the turned edge of the top
layer before placing it over the
underlayer. Steam press completed
seams.
Curved
Seams
Definition
long rounded seams sewn into
women's blouses or shirts to add
shaping or a tailored fit to closely
follow a woman's shape
How
Press seams with outward curves open over a
seam board or near the edge of pressing board.
Press only 2” to 3” at a time.
Complete the pressing over a rounded cushion or
rolled Turkish towel, taking care not to shrink or
stretch the seam line.

bodice of a dress are joined.
How
Press seam allowances open, then
press both edges together.
Leave the seam allowances open if
neither bodice nor skirt is bulky at
waistline seam.
