The Movie "sully" is based on true life events captured by the pilot, Captain Chesley sully who had to make an emergency landing in the Hudson river on the 15th of January 2009 while flying a passenger jet with 155 passengers including himself onboard. After watching the movie, important scenes and incident stuck to me. For example, the fact that he had just couple of seconds to decide to either fly the plane to the nearest airport as instructed by the terminal or land in the Hudson river. Another fact to take away from the movie is that the captain of is supposed to be the last person off a plane or boat and this was clearly demonstrated by the pilot as he went to the back of the plane to make sure there was no one else left before he got off the plane himself. Despite achieving this miraculous feat, the NTSB still faulted him and formed a panel for not taking directives from the airport terminal who had directed him to LaGuardia airport for emergency landing. One lesson we can all take away from the movie is data can be wrong and simulation is quite different from real life situations and they should not be used as a yard stick in cases like this Who is Captain Chesley sully and what kind of man is he some people may ask. We can start off by saying he is a man of Integrity. He is committed doing the right thing irrespective of the situation he finds himself. Accountability is one the characters that can be attributed to sully, even though the nation saw him as a hero, he still submitted himself to NTSB to account for his actions and performance leading to the landing in the Hudson river. Captain Sully can be said to be humanistic, this he demonstrated by making sure everyone on board the plane got out safely before he left the plane and even when they were taken onshore, he kept asking for a number count to make sure everyone was safe. He was empowered to make decisions while performing his duty as pilot with many years of experience of flying. A good leader is open minded and ready to consider people's opinion and not be rigid. The captain demonstrated this quality by first seeking advice on what to do when the engines were blown up from the airport tower and asked his co-pilot if he had a better idea other than landing in the Hudson river. His virtuous character was also exhibited by doing what was right by him and the passengers on board by doing the right thing the right way .In my own opinion , Captain sully's leadership style is more of a servant leadership .According to (Coetzer, Bussin and Geldenhuys, 2017) ,Servant leadership can be defined as a multidimensional leadership theory that starts with a desire to serve, followed by an intent to lead and develop others , to ultimately achieve a higher purpose objective to the benefit of individuals, organisations, and societies .His desire to improve the safety of passengers as against making profit is evident as he already started his own company solely for that purpose thereby making airplane safe ,passenger get to their destination in one piece not worrying and eliminating the possibilities of crashes destroying lives and properties There are three components that make up the responsible leadership performance which is the constituency, responsibleness and domain of performance. A leader cannot emerge if there are no constituency to serve. According to (Koh, 2014) The constituency is a group of followers or stakeholders who could reside inside or outside the performance system, have a high or low authority over it and have either high or low potential impact on it. It's a crucial factor which helps in identifying the needs to be met to a certain level and ways of going about it. The framework of responsibleness can be split into 3 dimension, effective/efficient, endurance and ethical. These are based on the leader’s ability to read different situations and apply the right response after carefully observing the situation putting the earlier stated dimensions into consideration. The last dimension is the domain of performance. According to (Koh, 2014) The key dependent variable of leadership is performance, which is an essential focus and outcome of leadership lacking in most theories on responsible leadership. Performance can also be split into two variables which is the activity which involves the process and the result which is the outcome. It occurs within the parameter of the system and its determined by its constituents. The constituency of Captain Chesley Sullenberger in the movie "sully" are the stakeholders. These are the investors and his employers, US Airways where is employed as the lead pilot. His colleagues which are his co-pilot and the flight attendants on that flight and the customers who are the passengers that boarded the plane. The desired goal and objective was to get them to their destination safely but changed when the plane lost both engines shortly after takeoff to making a safe landing in the Hudson river. Responsibilness comes into the picture as the captain had to make a decision to land the plane in the Hudson river based on the situation he was in.His decision was ethical in the sense that he did the right thing the right way based on the situation he was in.He also endured the bashing of NTSB and proved them wrong that human effect does come to play in situations like that .His effectiveness led to the safety of the life of the passengers and crew member on board which should not have come into question. As rightly mentioned , nobody plans and practices such scenarios of birds knocking out the engines of the airplane as they play the contextual factor that led to the emergency landing.Another factor that needs to be considered is the city which he was flying over at the time. New york is one of the most populated cities in united states of america and indeed the world. If he had done otherwise , there would have been severe lost of lives and properpeties .Many people would even think it was another terroist attack on the united states, many people would reduce flying which would have a negative impact on airlines and US Airways in paticular
