Two Kinds SPE
The best character trait to describe the narrator, Jing-mei, from “Two Kind” is
determined. First, in the story is says “I won’t let her change me, I promised myself. I won’t be
what I’m not.” Here, Jing-mei has decided to no longer try to be a prodigy, despite her mother’s
wishes the she become one. This proves the narrator is determined because she is promising
herself that she will not change her decision to disobey her mother about becoming a prodigy no
matter what. Jing-mei proves her tenacity by following through and not giving in to her mother
throughout the entire story. Second, in the story the narrator also says, “I as so determined not to
try, not to be anybody different, that I learned to only play the earsplitting preludes, the most
discordant hymns.” The narrators mother forces Jing-mei to play the piano, but she refuses to put
forth into learning to play. This also proves that Jing-mei is determined because despite her
mother forcing her to play the piano, the narrator has not swerved from her decision to not be a
prodigy. Jing-mei is outright refusing to let her mother make decisions for her. In conclusion, the
narrator from “Two Kind” is determined.
