My Topic is : Student Engagement
I chose this topic because keeping students
on task is the primary challenge for any
teacher. If your elementary school or
middle school students are doing what they
should be doing, then you do not have any
management problems.
Data Collection Method :
• Interviews with students
•Surveys with questions that kids can
answer
•Teacher reflection log
•Parent interviews
Emotionally disturbed students:
It has been proven that the rates of
emotionally disturbed students are now much
higher, these problems are identified and
accepted in mainstream classes so there is an
important cause and urge to learn more
strategies for successful inclusion of such
students.
Strategies:
•Asking these children about personal
preferences; favourite music, concerns and
favored activities would make the picture
clearer to me and cut a story short. (
checklists )
•Indentifying the child's history
•Working with parents and other teachers
on a behavior intervention plan.
Be extra cautious not to ever scream or
yell at an emotionally disturbed
Being careful with tone and verbal
communication would provide a safe
environment and reduce inducing
aggression from the child.
•Make sure positive class rules are well
conveyed to the child but I'd avoid
overwhelming him/her with them. Just
the right amount to set clear expectations
and to maintain order and a positive
atmosphere in class
ADD/ADHD child:
I have at least one of these in each class
and according to research the rate has
skyrocketed 16 %since 2007, this means 1
of 5 boys has ADHD
Getting to know the individual student and
being mindful to his/her uniqueness is on
top of the recommended list , I started to
realize that knowing the individual better
is the key to most learning disabilities.
• Seating the student away from any
distracters is another important aspect and
it draws my attention again that the
seating chart shouldn't be done
haphazardly
•Allow physical activity breaks and outdoor
instructions
•Provide academic instruction in the
morning as their concentration pattern
worsens throughout the day
• Allow this child a stress ball or something
to play with when needing a break.
•
•Give short, chunked directions, make sure
you look to the student in the eye,
recognize and praise all good behavior, use
visuals, build their vocabulary and connect
with home.
• Set a secret signal with child and use
when he/she are off task. Set a timer and
encourage the student to work
uninterrupted until the timer goes off,
reward student for being able compose
him/herself.
