

A computer is an electronic device that can
store, retrieve and process data.
Computer can bee used in different ways eg.

Typing documents

Playing games

Browsing the web

Creating or editing videos
Parts of a computer

A computer has two main parts



Hardware
software
Hardware

There are physical parts like monitor, mouse, speaker,
printer, keyboard, CPU etc

Monitor



The part that display information
Central Processing Unit (CPU).

It is a brain of an computer

It process all the information it receives from other
computer components.
Keyboard

Used to enter data

It has keys written different characters (alphabets,
symbols and numbers)

Mouse


Printer


Produce sound
Connection cables


Used to printout readable text on sheet of paper (hard copy)
Speakers


Used to position a cursor on a computer screen
Connect the computer to power supply
Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)

It allow the computer to keep running for at least a short time when a primary source of
power is lost.

It also provide protection from power surges
Parts of keyboard


A typical keyboard has 104 keys for alphabets,
numbers, symbols and special characters.
The keys are grouped according to their
functions as follows



Alphanumeric keys

These keys consists of both letter and numbers.

Number keys are located on top of the letter keys and on the right side of the
keyboard
Navigation keys

These keys are between letter keys and number keys.

They move cursor left, right, up or down the screen.
Punctuation keys

These keys contain punctuation marks like question marks, semi
colon,colon,comma, full stop and other symbol.
Command keys and special keys



Command keys relay a command eg. enter,
return (Backspace), Delete.
Function keys F1-F12 are used in conjunction
with other keys for shortcuts.
Other keys used for shortcuts includes Alt and
Control keys together with other keys
Using word processing program
Word processing program is a computer
technology that helps one to type a document,
format and print it or store it for future use.
Word program involves
a)Typing a document using Microsoft word
b)Formatting the text
c)Saving or storing the text and
d)Printing the text
Activity

Start Microsoft word

Start your computer

On the desktop click on start menu

On the start menu click all programs

Click Microsoft office on the list

From the display list click Microsoft office word

Now use the blank page displayed to type your text
activity

Typing and formatting a document or text

Type a document with at lest five sentences

Formatting means making changes on the text to make it appear the way you want it to look like.

Your teacher will help you do the following format on your text

Drop-cap a line or paragraph

Bold, italic and underline

Highlighting a text

Un-do and re-do

Use of Capital letter

Copy,cut an paste

Deleting

Check spelling

Inserting graphics such a pictures, tables and chats
Saving a document


After editing and formatting the text it can now
be stored safely for future use. Storing data in
a computer is called saving files or documents
The storage devices includes the flash disk,
computer disk/DVD, floppy disk
Save your work

Click on file menu

Select save As

Write file name on the dialogue box eg. ANAZAK

Select save

This is saved on the documents or the site you choose
to save your work

You can practice saving your work on other devices like
flash disk, DVD and external hard disc.
Printing your work/text


A computer is connected to a printer to print
copies of a document in the computer.
The data seen on the screen is called soft copy
and when printed on a paper it is called a hard
copy.
Steps to print a document

Go to file menu

Select print

Type page number to be printed on the page dialogue box

On the copies dialogue box, write number of copies to be printed

On the printer name, select the printer you want to use in case you have more printers
connected to your computer

Ensure there are enough papers on the printer’s tray

Click ok

The game is played by two player, you against the computer

How to play

It is played on a 64 square board. Each player has 12 pieces of one color.

The aim of the game is to capture all the 12 pieces of the opponent o block them so
that they cannot move.

The pieces are moved diagonally one square at a time towards the opponents side

Remember capturing is must if you have a chance to do so.
Draft game

Crowning the king


If a piece moves all the way to the other side of the
board, It become a king. The king can move forward or
backwards diagonally. You can make several kings if
possible.
Determining the winner

The winner is the first player to capture all the
opponent’s pieces or the first to stop all the
opponent’s pieces from moving or advancing.
