Our sample target is a local commercial airline service. A viral complaint letter pertaining to the issue is used as a testimony to the gravity of the matter. Intercultural disputes occur when cultural discrepancies are not considered within a culturally diverse setting. Air stewardesses wearing revealing clothes and restriction is imposed on the wearing of hijab. Malaysia as a multicultural country should showcase its culture. Workers should be given a choice regarding their attires or uniforms to a certain degree. 03 Clause 3 PROBLEM STATEMENT Fair treatment to all, regardless of gender and culture. Understanding and respecting different cultures. Effective communication between employer and employees. Public statement to the people. A happy workplace means higher work quality. 03 Clause 3 PROBLEM STATEMENT Misconception on how the uniform should look like. Taking the wrong aspect to appeal to the public or customers. Little to no communication between the employees and employer. Discrimination unto people of one ethnic and religion. The type of literature review is thematic, i.e. we synthesized and used information acquired from the Internet based around this topic. A complaint letter addresses the local airline services which need improvement in terms of female cabin crew’s attires. 04 Clause 4 LITERATURE REVIEW COMPLAINT LETTER BY ‘AN AIRASIA PASSENGER FROM NEW ZEALAND’ REGARDING THE ATTIRE OF THE FEMALE FLIGHT ATTENDANTS Literature Review • Technical & Professional Communication A New Zealand passenger, Dr. June Robertson purportedly wrote a complaint letter to a Malaysian senator expressing her disagreement toward AirAsia’s female flight attendants’ uniforms. • She felt disgusted by the female cabin crew wearing “extremely short skirts”. • She also stated that the steward on the other hand dressed appropriately and portray professional manner. • According to her, Malaysia is a respectful country, thus cultural consideration must be given heed. Being able to understand that negligences happen due to individuals’ own errors and are not culturally-driven. 05 1 Clause 5 SOLUTIONS TO OVERCOME THE ISSUE THE GOVERNMENT’S INTERVENTION Human Resources Ministry should step in to tackle the problem of employers denying female employees from wearing the headscarf at workplace. Under the Ministry of Transport, the Government can enact and amend laws and policies related to the dress code of air hostesses. 05 21 Clause 5 SOLUTIONS TO OVERCOME THE ISSUE WOMEN’S RIGHTS EMPOWERMENT Women’s groups, rights activists, and NGOs joined forces with the government to express their feelings and thoughts to the general public in the wake of the controversy surrounding female employees being denied the right to wear the headscarves at hotels and commercial flights. Students are taught about the cultural differences and beliefs that exist in our multiracial society and how they can be applied in 05 4 21 Clause 5 SOLUTIONS TO OVERCOME THE ISSUE NURTURING INTERCULTURAL AND WORKPLACE DIVERSITY When employers open up job opportunities for people who are capable and proficient irrespective of sociocultural background, they allow coworkers to strike up interracial rapports, engage in quality dialogue, and also establish cognitive diversity. Each party needs to play their part and work together to solve the issue. A small step of change made today may bring about big advantages tomorrow. Communication is the most important thing. Instill the knowledge from a young age and continue to do so with time. Remember that at any place, there will always be people of different cultures than you. 06
