The original 13 colonies are divided into 3 different sections.
 The New England colonies – Connecticut, Massachusetts Bay, New Hampshire, Rhode
Island & Providence Plantations
o Plymouth Colony – 1620
o Forests and fur trapping
 The Middle colonies – Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York
o Good farm lands and natural harbors
 The Southern colonies – Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia
o Jamestowne - 1607
o Grew their own food
o Cash crops
Governments
 Charter Colony – the governing powers of the monarch are restricted
o Massachusetts
o Connecticut
o Rhode Island
 Royal Colony – ruled by a governor appointed by the monarch
o North Carolina
o New Hampshire
o New York
o South Carolina
o Georgia
o New Jersey
o Virginia
 Proprietary Colony – land granted by the crown and full rights to govern given to the
proprietor
o Maryland
o Pennsylvania
o Delaware
Colonial Taxes
 Parish and municipal taxes
 Quitrents – a land tax, an annual payment or rent for the land
 Tithable – person who paid, or for whom someone else paid the tax
 Head or poll tax – a tax levied on every person
