Language is veritable tool with which humans communicate their thoughts, feelings and ideas. Such is
the importance of language to humans that it has been hybridized into First, Second and Third tiers.
There is no gainsaying the fact that Nigeria is a second language user of English. Countries like England,
USA, Ireland, Canada and Jamaica speak English as their First Language; countries like Nigeria, India,
Philippines and Germany speak English as a Second Language while countries like Japan, South Korea
and Turkey speak English as a Third Language. In all, there are approximately 800 million people who
speak English all over the world.
About the Language Department Grenville Secondary
The Language Department at Grenville School is a synthesis of English, French and Arabic Languages.
We boast an award-winning department with specialty in IGCSE English, IGCSE Literature, Checkpoint
English, A-Level English, A-Level Literature, IGCSE French, Arabic Language, SAT and TOEFL.
We specialize in producing versatile and imaginative students with the strong interpretive and
communication skills needed for today's changing world.
The English Department is committed to providing students with quality instruction that encourages them
to become better thinkers and problem-solvers. We direct our efforts towards student-centered learning
and other differentiated learning strategies.
Curriculum
Grenville Secondary School Language Department operates the British Curriculum as stipulated by
Cambridge International Education. Solid knowledge of vocabulary choice; spelling strategies;
punctuation range and variation; varied sentence types/structures/lengths; phrases and clauses; complex
nouns; adverbials; prepositional phrases; structural, linguistic and rhetorical features of fiction and nonfiction texts; presentational features of non-fiction texts; analysis of text using detailed textual evidence;
issues of text, audience and purpose; formality; character, setting, themes, viewpoint; narrative and
dialogue are given in a continuum. The Department aimed at producing a TOTAL LANGUAGE LEARNER
who will be able to:

Comprehend and respond in oral and written forms

Communicate ideas, information, and feelings using a variety of media
•
Think critically, creatively, and reflectively
•
Develop an evolving understanding of self and others
Staff
The English Department boasts of seasoned, experienced and professional educators. It is from the pool
of professionals that the current Vice-Principal, Mrs. J.A. Imade has been pulled. The Department also
prides on the ability and motherly touch of Mrs. Ikegbu, who handles English in Grade 7, 8 and 10. We
also have Mrs. Lina Kotrob whose proficiency in Arabic Language is enviable. Mr. Aderemi Taiwo handles
French Language up to the IGCSE classes 10 and 11. Lastly we have Mr. Funto Adenubi, who handles
English Language and Literature in the senior classes, up to the A-Level.
With a systematic blend of English Curricular all over the world, the Department of Language, Grenville
School do not only make great learners out of students, we also make great linguists, writers, literary
scholars and future problem-solvers out of them.
