Unit 3: Comparing Rational Numbers
While visiting a new town, Tanya and her father spent the day walking around. They
walked 3/4 mile from their hotel to the dock. Then they walked 0.9 mile from the
dock to a coffee shop. Finally, they walked from the coffee shop to a museum, from
which they took the subway back to the hotel.
1. Which distance is further, from the hotel to the dock, or from the dock to the
coffee shop? Explain how you know.
2. The distance from the coffee shop to the museum was shorter than both the
distance from the hotel to the dock, and the distance from the dock to the coffee
shop. Write a decimal that could show how long the distance from the coffee shop to
the museum might have been, in miles. Explain your reasoning.
