LoGo Water
Towards effective involvement of Local Government in
Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) in river basins
of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region
 Duration: 2005 - 2008
Coordinated by the ICLEI European Secretariat and in collaboration with ICLEI's regional of ce for Africa
as one of the project partners the main activities of the LoGo Water project were the following:
1. Taking stock of existing knowledge and experience on models and frameworks of local government
participation in IWRM taking into account, amongst others, the SADC Protocol on Shared
Watercourses for the Southern Africa region and the European Union Water Framework Directive for
the European region.
2. Identifying an effective role for local governments in IWRM in SADC river basins, focusing on the
Limpopo river basin as a model area by working closely with key stakeholders and eight local
governments in the Limpopo basin.
3. Supporting the implementation of the role of local governments in IWRM in the SADC region by
guiding local governments and other stakeholders in the implementation of actions aimed at adopting
IWRM policies and practices.
4. Disseminating the project's results via a website, printed material, and an international seminar in
order to raise awareness among the public as well as experts and stakeholders, encourage other local
governments to engage in IWRM, promote the implementation of IWRM in SADC; and foster further
research on the topic.
