Introduction
Today, learning and studying are inevitable to everyone for a viable society. It provides a
platform for one to build their skills, knowledge, and expertise in any profession of choice. This
paper is aimed at comparing and contrasting online study and classroom study.
Overview
The two modes of study have notable similarities and differences. For instance, the paper is
aimed at analyzing difference regarding convenience and setting, ability to get feedback and the
environment. However, there are distinct ways in the manner in which knowledge is imparted to
an individual. Most importantly, the core of studying is to acquire knowledge to be used career
development and self-actualization. (Garrison, 2004).
Online and face to face study are the two common ways used in the world today. Many students
are changing from a face to face study done in a classroom to an online learning environment.
The reason behind the choice of study is purely based on efficiency and the cost involved.
According to U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics, 2016), by
2013, “there were approximately 5,522,194 students who were enrolled in online education
courses at degree and post-secondary institutions".
There are notable similarities
First, they both require a considerable amount of work and effort to be put in place. The two
needs an effort, you cannot just sit down and relax, and it involves some commitment. Similarly,
it provides an opportunity for learners to give feedback. In a face to face environment, a student
can ask a question or clarification from the teacher and be delivered immediately. However, the
case for an online study is different as it may take a relatively long time to get the feedback.
Also, Use of assignments and continuous assessments tests are used as part of the experience.
Similarly, both learning environments, have challenges as well as opportunities for everyone.
The other similarity is that both modes of study require students to have proper time
management. Lastly, despite many narratives associated with the underperformance of online
study students, there is less difference regarding the performance of students in both learning
methods. The ability for one to grasp and understand what they have learned either in a
classroom or online is what determines their performance. (Morgan, 2016).
Differences between online study and face to face study
There are some differences between the two modes of study. First, Face to face study provides an
opportunity for students to get immediate feedback while online research does not give relatively
quick feedback. Secondly, the online study includes both synchronous and asynchronous
learning while face to face study does not. Thirdly, online study provides an opportunity for selfdirection together with discipline to get the coursework completed within time. Fourthly, in
online research, students stand an equal chance in on equal footing while those in face to face
study, the students that are active in lass take advantage of those who are silent. The teacher will
always give priority to the students who are engaged in class through the answer to questions as
well as overall oral responses. For instance, a student that raises his or her hand more often may
have advantage over is his or her colleagues. Lastly, the Online study does not provide an
opportunity for Networking and social interactions like face to face study. Online study means
that one studies on their own and there is no opportunity for social interaction like the face to
face study Are distinct in an online learning environment than in traditional learning.
Conclusion
In summary, online study and face to face study are almost similar but they differ on amount of
time one spends in class, the time it takes to get feedback and the demographics needed to carry
out the study. In context, online study do not provide an opportunity to get instant feedback
while face to face does. Furthermore, in online study, one do not have to be in a physical class
like in the case of face to face study. Lastly, it online study is not social as there is no physical
interaction like the case of face to face study.
Today, the majority of the people spend most of their time online making it necessary to use the
same platform for learning. Similarly, learning online does require a lot of commitment
compared to face to face study where one has to attend a class and meet with their tutors
physically. Also, many people find it necessary to study online because it is flexible and
efficient. You can login in an online class even while traveling. It online requires a personal
computer and an internet connection. Furthermore, from the observation, the online study does
not need a lot of resources and the fees paid is relatively less for many institutions compared to
enrolling in a face to face classroom.
