Read the following story and answer the questions given below:
The story of Devl, a child activist promoting the cause of education.
I am Devli. I was born in a stone quarry in Haryana. My parents were also born there. Our entire
family worked in the stone quarry as we were bonded labourers. It was only when we were rescued by
Bachpan Bachao Andolan*that we understood what it means to be free. I started working at the age of
five. I used to break bigger rocks into smaller ones. My sisters and I used to load rocks into trucks along
with everyone else. We had never seen a banana or any fruit. When we were first given a banana after
being rescued, we ate it without peeling it off. We had never seen paper and didn't know anything
beyond the stone quarry and the work there. After rescue we were given homes in Jodhpur, our native
place, in a colony, where I stay now. I went to Balika Ashram, a centre of BBA in Delhi where I learned
to read and write and also received training in how to use computers. After staying there for a year, I
went back to my parents and now study in the school in my village. I also enrolled 15 children into
school in my village. I am now in class five. I like going to school, studying Hindi and English and
playing with my friends. I want to be a teacher when I grow up.

Reading
Activity 1
Give a silent as well loud reading of the following story. Get the help of your teacher
while reading.
Once nearly 50 men and women were attending a seminar. Suddenly the
speaker stopped and decided to do a group activity. He started giving each one a
balloon. Each one was asked to write his/her name on it using a marker pen. Then
all the balloons were collected and put in another room.
Now the participants were allowed into that room and asked to find the balloon
which had their name written within 5 minutes. Everyone was frantically searching
for their name, dashing with each other, pushing around others and there was utter
confusion.
At the end of 5 minutes no one could find their own balloon. Now each one
was asked to randomly collect a balloon and give it to the person whose name was
written on it. Within minutes everyone had their own balloon.
The speaker then began, “This is happening in our lives. Everyone is madly
looking for happiness all around, not knowing where it is.
Our happiness lies in the happiness of other people. Give them their
happiness; you will get your own happiness. And this is the purpose of human life…”
Activity 2
Read the following story carefully and answer the questions given below.
An 87 Year Old College Student Named Rose
The first day of college the professor introduced himself and challenged the
students to get to know someone they didn’t already know. John stood up to look
around when a gentle hand touched his shoulder. He turned around to find a
wrinkled, little old lady looking up at him with a smile.
She said, “Hi My name is Rose. I’m eighty-seven years old.”
“Why are you in college at such an old age?” John asked.
“I always dreamed of having a college education and now I’m getting one!” she
told me.
After class they walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate
milkshake. They became instant friends. Every day for the next three months, they
would leave class together and talk nonstop. John was always mesmerized listening
to this “time machine” as she shared her wisdom and experience with him.
11
Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon and she easily made
friends wherever she went. At the end of the semester, Rose was invited to speak. I’ll
never forget what she taught us.
She cleared her throat and began, “ There are only few secrets for success and
happiness. Remain active always. We do not stop playing because we are old; we
grow old because we stop playing.
You’ve got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We have so
many people walking around who are dead and don’t even know it! There is a huge
difference between growing older and growing up.
If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don’t do one
productive thing, you will turn twenty years old.
If I am eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything
I will turn eighty-eight.
Anybody can grow older. That doesn’t take any talent or ability. The idea is to
grow up by always finding opportunity in change. Have no regrets.
The elderly usually don’t have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did
not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets.”
At the year’s end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those
years ago. One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep.
Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in tribute to the
wonderful woman who taught by example that it’s never too late to be all you can
possibly be.

Activity 1
Listen to the following story carefully read by your teacher and answer the
questions orally first and then mark the answers in the work book.
The Other Side of Actor Suriya
The versatile actor Suriya has another side to his personality. He is not just
the celebrity Suriya that we know of. He is also a sensitive citizen and philanthropy
resides in him. Through his Agaram Foundation he has been silently helping
deserving students to rise above poverty and emerge successful.
“It is just an extension of what my father did through his Sivakumar
Educational Trust for more than 35 years. I just expanded his vision,” he says of his
work.
17
He says, “I see my social activities as a responsibility and not a service. I feel
it is my duty to give back to society in whatever little way possible. Fortunately, I am
blessed with more than what I deserve.”
With proper mentoring and giving exposure through workshops in
communication skills, teamwork, goal setting and leadership, he has lit the lives of
many poor students aspiring to become big.
Agaram keeps him busy and there is no leisure time for him. “Few years ago,
I met a school kid named Rajnikanth, a first generation student belonging to a gypsy
community. He was a brilliant student and also excelled in sports and
extracurricular activity. Impressed with his scores in Class X board exams, we
presented him a cash award of Rs.8,000 from our foundation and he enquired if he
could donate the money to the girl students in his class to help them get new skirts,”
recalls Suriya. Living in abject penury, the boy was prepared to part with the sum
meant for his well being and it turned out to be an eye opener for Suriya and the
inspiration to start Agaram.
Though Agaram is his brainchild, he believes there are multiple other contributors
who make it a success. He credits journalist Gnanavel, who suggested the name for the
foundation and sacrificed his career to serve in it and the non-governmental organization
Vazhai, a group of first generation graduates, who tirelessly guide first generation
students like them. “We borrowed the concept from ‘ Vazhai’ and started ‘ Vidhai’ to help
deserving students come up in life. Our main idea is to expose them to newer horizons
and make them global students,” says Suriya.

A Native American grandfather was talking to his grandson about his feelings.
He said, I feel as if I have two wolves fighting in my heart. One wolf is vengeful, angry,
and violent. The other wolf is loving and compassionate.
The grandson asked him, “Which wolf will win the fight in your heart?"
The grandfather answered, “The one I feed.”

Activity 2
Read the following story carefully and answer the questions given below.
Picture of Peace
There once was a king who offered a prize to the artist who would paint the
best picture of peace. Many artists tried. The king looked at all the pictures. But
there were only two he really liked, and he had to choose between them.
One picture was of a calm lake. The lake was a perfect mirror for peaceful
towering mountains all around it. Overhead was a blue sky with fluffy white clouds.
All who saw this picture thought that it was a perfect picture of peace.
The other picture had mountains, too. But these were rough and bare. Above
was an angry sky, from which rain fell and in which lightning played. Down the side
of the mountain tumbled a foaming waterfall. This did not look peaceful at all.
But when the king looked closely, he saw behind the waterfall a tiny bush growing
in a crack in the rock. In the bush a mother bird had built her nest. There, in the midst
of the rush of angry water, sat the mother bird on her nest - in perfect peace.
Which picture do you think won the prize? The king chose the second picture.
Do you know why?
"Because," explained the king, "peace does not mean to be in a place where
there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. Peace means to be in the midst of all those
things and still be calm in your heart. That is the real meaning of peace.”
State whether the following are true or false:
1. The king wanted the artists to paint a picture of piece.
2. Several artists tried to paint the picture.
3. The king had to choose among many pictures.
4. The first picture was of rough and bare mountains.
5. All assumed the first one to be a perfect picture of peace.
6. There was a mother bird in the first picture.
7. There was a crack in the rock of the second picture.
8. The mother bird was concerned of its safety.
9. The king offered the prize for the second one.
10. Peace means to be calm amidst noise and trouble.

Reading
Activity 1
Read the following friendship song silently as well aloud with the help of your teacher.
Friends
What are friends,
I've often wondered.
Friends have come,
And friends have gone.
Seldom do I hear their voices,
Like old forgotten songs.
I've walked a thousand lonely miles,
And often wondered, "What went wrong?"
But I've got to make you see;
A friend to you I'll always be.
A friend to you I'll always be.
A friend is not a thing to trade,
Not to be bought, nor to be sold;
Not the ring upon your fingers.
It's not the bills which you fold,
Not the coins your pocket holds.
A friend is young, A friend is old.
And I've got to make you see,
A friend is true, a friend is free;
A friend to you I'll always be.
A friend to you I'll always be.
Activity 2
Read the following story and answer the questions given below.
A Touching Story about Friendship
A voyaging ship was destroyed during a storm at sea and only two of the men
on it were able to swim to a small, desert like island. The two friends agreed that they
had no other choice but to pray to God. However, to find out whose prayer was more
powerful, they agreed to divide the area between them and stay on opposite sides of
the island.
The first thing they prayed for was food. The next morning, the first man saw
a fruit-bearing tree on his side of the land, and he was able to eat its fruit. The other
man remained hungry. After a week, the first man was lonely and he decided to pray
for a wife. The next day, another ship was wrecked, and the only survivor was a
woman who swam to his side of the land. On the other side of the island, there was
nothing. Soon the first man prayed for a house, clothes, more food. The next day,
like magic, all of these were given to him. However, the second man still had nothing.
Finally, the first man prayed for a ship, so that he and his wife could leave the
island. In the morning, he found a ship. The first man boarded the ship with his wife
and decided to leave the second man on the island. He considered the other man
unworthy to receive God’s blessings, since none of his prayers had been answered.
As the ship was about to leave, the first man heard a voice from heaven,
“Why are you leaving your companion on the island?”
30
“My blessings are mine alone, since I was the one who prayed for them,” the
first man answered. “His prayers were all unanswered and so he does not deserve
anything.”
“You are mistaken!” the voice scolded him. “He had only one prayer, which I
answered. If not for that, you would not have received any of my blessings.”
“Tell me,” the first man asked the voice, “What did he pray for that I should
owe him anything?”
“He prayed that all your prayers be answered “
State whether the following are true or false:
1. The ship carried only the two friends.
(
)
2. The two friends reached an island.

3. There was nobody in the island.

The Ignorant Boy
A little boy heard that whatever we ask of God would be given to us. Keeping this
in mind, when the boy’s family was in great distress, he wrote a letter simply addressed
“To God”, asking if He could send Rs.100 per month to meet h is expenses for his studies.
He wrote clearly that his father was out of work and his mother was ill. The postmaster
of the local post office opened the letter and read it. He concernedly recommended his
case to the local Rotary Club. After proper verification of the boy’s financial status, the
officials of the Rotary Club decided to send by money order Rs.50 every month. After a
few months the postmaster received another letter from the boy addressed “To God”. He
opened it and it read “Dear God, thank you for the money you have been sending, but
next time onwards, kindly deal directly because the postmaster takes half of the amount
as his commission.

Reading
Activity I: Give a silent as well as loud reading of the following story. Get the help of
your teacher while reading.
Once upon a time, there lived a generous and kind-hearted king. But the people
weren’t happy with their king because the king was very lazy and would not do anything
other than eating and sleeping.
He spent days and weeks and months in his bed either eating something or
sleeping. The king became a potato couch and the people started to worry about the king.
One day, the king realized that he couldn’t even move his body, not even his foot. He
became very fat and his enemies made fun of him, calling him ‘fatty king’, ‘bulky king’ etc.
The king invited expert doctors from various parts of his country and offered them
generous rewards to make him fit. Unfortunately, none could help the king gain his health
and fitness. The king spent enormous amounts of money but everything went in vain.
One fine morning, a holy man visited the country. He heard about the ill-health of
the king, and informed the minister at the palace that he could easily cure the king.
Hearing these promising words, the minister became very happy. He requested the king
to meet the holy man to get rid of his problem.
The holy man resided at a distant place. Since the king could not move his body, he
asked the minister to bring the holy man to the palace, but the holy man refused. He said
that the king had to go to him, in order to get cured.
After strenuous efforts, the king met the holy man at the latter’s residence. The holy man
complimented the king saying that he was a good ruler, and said that he would soon regain his
health. He asked the king to come for treatment the next day. He told the king also that the
king would be treated only if he came on foot to the holy man’s residence.
The King was unable to walk even a few steps on the road, but aided by his
followers, he reached the holy man’s place. Unfortunately, the holy man was not available
there and his devotee requested the king to come and meet him the next day for treatment.
This was repeated for two weeks and the king never met the holy man, and never had any
treatment.
Gradually, the king realized that he felt a lot lighter, lost a considerable amount of
weight and felt more active than before. He realized the reason why the holy man asked
him to reach his place by walking. Very soon, the king regained his health, and the people
were very happy in his kingdom.
Activity II : Read the following passage and answer the questions given below:
Rahul has been a drug addict since he was a teenager. He has tried to kick the
habit many times; going in and out of rehabilitation centers. He managed to stay clean for
a month before suffering a relapse. There are many drug addicts like Rahul. Why
are they into it in the first place? It doesn't matter if you are white or black or Asian or
African, every race has their share of drug abuse problems.
Some people say that it is due to the perception of drugs being "bad and illegal" and
therefore something so irresistible that you just have to try it. Somehow, teenagers are
more curious to discover the "forbidden fruit". Some manage to kick the habit early but
there are many others who are trapped.
For many teenagers, drug abuse is a mere escape. They use drugs to get out of their
misery, pain, confusion and loneliness. Some teenage drug addicts grow up without
guidance from their parents, and so they resort to drugs. Some are physically or mentally
abused and drugs become the only thing that they are able to count on. Many succumb to
42
drug addiction because of the need to feel like they belong. They try drugs to please their
friends or to be part of a group. Many teenage drug abusers are also low achievers in schools
and have low self-esteem.
There are also teenagers who claim that they were first exposed to different kinds
of drugs at parties and discos. These drugs were distributed freely the first few times and
they kept coming back for more. As a result, many of them became addicted even before
they knew it. In certain cases, these teenagers might resort to committing crimes to
support their expensive habit.
One effective tool in the fight against teen drug abuse is communication. Troubled
teens need some form of outlet from the problems or depression they are facing. Parents
should take time out from their busy schedules to spend time with their children and
listen to their problems. Communication, however, should go beyond words. Parents
should show their children that they really care. Adequate parental supervision has also
been found to be a deterrent to drug use in youth. Parents should know who their
children's friends are and what is going on in their social lives. School counselors should
also play an active role in providing information on drug abuse and also provide emotional
support.
One common belief is that drug abusers should be able to stop taking drugs if only
they are willing to change their behavior. However, drug addiction is a disease that affects
the brain and because of that, stopping drug abuse is not simply a matter of willpower.
Drug abuse can affect a person's self-control and ability to make sound decisions, and at
the same time send intense impulses to take drugs. Through scientific advances, we now
know that the abuse of drugs leads to changes in the structure and function of the brain
and at the same time, we also know that drug addiction can be successfully treated to
help people get over their addiction and resume productive lives.
The best way to prevent drug addiction is by educating teenagers about it. The more
they learn about the bad effects, the less their excuses to take it. This may even dissuade
them from using it.
1. How did Rahul try to get rid of his addiction to drugs?
2. What makes taking drug irresistible?
3. What is the claim of the teenagers with regard to drug addiction?
4. How do some teenagers meet the expensive habit?
5. What is the role of parents in preventing their children from drug abuse?


If you ask about the subject of the sentence, simply add the question word at the
beginning:
Eg.
Jamses writes good poems. — Who writes good poems?

If there is a helping verb that precedes the main verb (for example: can, is, are,
was, were, will, would...), add the question word and invert the subject and the
helping verb.
Eg.
He can speak Chinese. — What can he speak?
They are leaving tonight. — When are they leaving?

If the sentence has verbs am, is, are, was and were, simply add the question

Yes / No Questions
Read the following and convert the sentences given in the next page into questions.
The following tells you how to frame questions for which the response will be either
‘Yes’ or ‘No’.
Eg. : 1. She is studying English.
2. Is she studying English?
The two sentences given above consist of 4 words each. However, the order of the
first two words differs, that is, ‘He is’ in the first sentence becomes ‘Is he’ in the
second sentence. In addition, the first one ends with a full stop (.), whereas, the
second ends with a question mark (?).
It is easy to convert a statement into a question by bringing the helping verb to the
first position, followed by the subject.
The following is the order you have to bear in your mind:
He
can
study

Activity 1
During a fierce battle between two countries, a soldier called John saw his lifelong
friend Sam fall prey to the enemies’ gunfire. As they reached their camp, John asked
his officer to allow him to bring his fallen friend back. The officer said that he could
go but he wouldn’t be able to save his friend’s life since he was fatally wounded.
Everyone in the camp knew that Sam would probably be dead. Moreover, trying to
rescue the friend would end up killing John as well. Nevertheless, John decided to
risk his life to bring his best friend back. After much difficulty, he managed to find
his friend and carried him back to the camp. As the two entered the camp, Sam fell
dead. The officer checked the wounded friend and said to John, “I told that it would
be a waste trying to save your friend. Now, your friend is dead, and you are severely
wounded.”
“That’s okay, sir. But risking my life was not a waste because when I found him, he
was alive, and I had the satisfaction of hearing him say, ‘John, I knew you would
