The purpose of this project is to come up with a substitute for antioxidant wherein
the consumers will benefit both in economic and nutritional aspects.
In this study, the expediency of bougainvillea (Bougainvillea spectabilis) leaves
extract as antioxidant was tested. 300mg dried and fresh samples were collected and
were soaked in ethanol for 48 hours and were macerated. Next, the extracts were
filtered until all the extract passed through the filter paper. After this, it was distilled
and evaporated until all the ethanol was separated from the extracts. The extracts were
put in containers with peeled potatoes for observations.
The results showed that the bougainvillea (Bougainvillea spectabilis) extract has the
expediency to be a substitute for antioxidant. The results showed that bougainvillea
(Bougainvillea spectabilis) leaves extract contains a number of alkaloids, phytosterols,
phenolics and flavonoids which makes it effective as an antioxidant. Also, there is a
significant difference of the different bougainvillea (Bougainvillea spectabilis) extracts
and control since the computed F-value (17.79727599) is greater than the critical Fvalue (2.368270235) at alpha 0.05% level of significance. It was also identified that as
the concentration of extract increases, its effectivity as antioxidant also increases as
revealed by the absorbance reading at 517 nm wavelength and the percentage of freeradical inhibition but in the peeled potato test, it was an indirect relationship. The
researcher also discovered that fresh bougainvillea (Bougainvillea spectabilis) leaves
extract is more effective than dried bougainvillea leaves extract. Lastly, the best
concentration of the bougainvillea extract is 1284.775 µg/mL.
