Multiply and Divide Monomials
OBJ: I can simplify real number
expressions by multiplying and dividing
monomials.
CC.8.EE.1
Monomial: a number, variable, or
a product of a number and one or
more variables.
Math Ex: 5 7x
❖
x
Product of Powers
➢ Laws of Exponents:
Combine like bases.
➢ When bases are alike,
combine bases by adding
exponents.
■ Ex: 76*71
● Like Bases: 7
● Add exponents: 76+1
● 77=823,543
❖ Monomials with numbers
and variables:
➢ Use the commutative
property to move like
bases near one another.
➢ Multiply numbers/ add
exponents to combine like
bases.
■ EX:
-7x2*11x4
-7(11)*x2*x4
-77x2+4
-77x6
❖
Quotient of Powers
➢ When bases are alike,
combine bases by
subtracting exponents.
■ Ex: 612/62
● Like Bases: 6
●Subtract exponents: 612-2
● 610=60,466,176
❖ Monomials with numbers
and variables:
➢ Use the commutative
property to move like
bases on top of one
another.
➢ Subtract exponents to
combine like bases.
■ EX:
245392
23529
24-3*53-2*92-1
21*51*91=90
