REASON FOR SETTLEMENT
IMPORTANT PEOPLE & NOTES
Religious-Separatists puritans who were exiled to
Holland but wanted to settle in the new world to
create their own society. Virginia joint stock
company organized and they sailed on the
Mayflower. Thrown of course and landed outside
of the boundaries of the charter so they
established the Mayflower Compact which was
the framework for laws=Self government
Refuge for puritans “City Upon a Hill”. Strict
moral society led by religious principles.
William Bradford governor
Squanto from the Indian tribe Wampanoag taught how
to fish and farm-first Thanksgiving.
Economy based in fur, fish, and lumber.
Merged with Massachusetts Bay Colony because they
never received a legal charter from Britain.
Settled by Massachusettes Bay Company by royal
charter

ADDITIONAL NOTES
Established mills for grain and lumber, developed
fishing industry, shipbuilding, harbors for trade.
Successful because constant flow of new settles and
