TINOSPORA RUMPHII BOERL & CAPSICUM FRUTESCENS EXTRACTS: A HOUSEHOLD INSECTICIDE Proponent: SHARR LI MHAR L. TABEROS ABSTRACT This study uses the extract of chili (capsicum Frutescens, variety of Capsicum Annum) and Makabuhai (tinospora rumphii Boerl of the Crispamenaspermacea family) plant to control pests in our house. The Makabuhai extracts contains bitter substance, the principle colombine (2.22%); traces of an alkaloid; and a glucoside. Also contains an amorphous bitter principle, picroretine and traces of berberine. While chili produce the compounds called capsaicinoids, spicy taste and smell offensive to insects. The goal of this research is to determine the insecticidal effects of Makabuhai (Tinospora rumphii Boerl) stems and Chili (Capsicum Frutescens) extract. 200 grams of Makabuhai stems and of Chili were gathered and pounded separately using mortar and pestle. After pounding, the Makabuhai stems and Chili were soaked separately for 30 minutes with 60 mL of water. Both mixtures were strained using a piece of cloth to separate the pieces of Makabuhai stems and Chili from its extract. After processing its extracts, 5 mL of Makabuhai extract was tested on 5 termites, the result showed that the termites died slowly for more than 1 minute. Then, a separate 5 mL extract of Chili was also tested on another 5 termites and the result showed that the termites did not die. Another application was done, using the mixture of Makabuhai and Chili extracts, was tested on 5 termites. Spraying 5 mL of the mixture of Makabuhai and Chili extracts on 5 termites and was observed that the termites died after 1 minute faster than the previous applications. The same procedures were repeated three times and same results were observed. These STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM The researcher of this study aims to discover the insecticidal effects of Makabuhai and chili extracts as a potential household insecticides. The result of this study answers the following questions: • What is the insecticidal potential of Makabuhai and Chili extract as household insecticide? • What is the impact of Makabuhai and Chili insecticide to the environment? • What are the economic advantages of the Makabuhai and Chili insecticide compared to the commercial one? SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY This study investigates the potential of the Makabuhai and chili extracts combine together as a household insecticide against termites. The mixture was made into a solution with little water and sprayed onto termites. The results of this study can hopefully offer significant and effective insecticidal potential of Makabuhai and Chili extract against termites to the: GENERAL PUBLIC who can benefit in the eradication of these destructive insects using an easy-to-make household insecticide; INDIVIDUAL who wanted to have homemade and easy to prepare insecticides since the Chili and Makabuhai are endemic plants; ENVIRONMENT which will serve as an alternative insecticide to the commercial ones which have destructive effects; and FUTURE RESEARCHERS for possible references in future studies. SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY This study is delimited to the potential insecticidal effect of Makabuhai and Chili extract against termites. METHODS AND PROCEDURES The researcher gathered all the necessary materials needed for the study including termites. All materials were checked if they were clean and safe for using. To avoid being exposed to the solution, the researcher wore gloves and goggles. For the preparation of the extract, the researcher gathered Makabuhai and Chili, which were brought by the classmates from their backyard gardens and some were collected from around the school campus. Since Makabuhai and Chili are endemic plants in this place, the gathering was made easy and fast. Then, the researcher weighed 200 grams of Makabuhai stems and were chopped into smaller pieces. Afterwards, it was pounded using the mortar and pestle until it started to produce some extracts. The same procedures were made by the chili. Both of the extracts were put inside a container separately. Poured 60ml of water to each container. The Makabuhai stems were soaked in 30 minutes to get the bitter substance from it. Both of the extracts were strained separately using a piece of cloth. The cloth was slightly squeezed to get more extract from the two mixtures. It was observed that the gathered extracts from each mixture is only 55ml each. There was a slight difference of 5ml to the water added to it. Lastly, 5 mL extract of Makabuhai stems and 5 mL extract of Chili put inside an empty spray bottle separately and another mixture of 2.5 mL Makabuhai extracts and 2.5 mL Chili extracts were mixed inside another spray bottle. It was then ready for application. It was observed that the mixture has a distinct smell. After processing its extracts, each solution was tested on termites in three times. The first test was done using the Makabuhai extracts. Spraying 5 mL of the extract on the termites, it was observed for more than 1 minute that the 5 termites slowly died. Another 10 mL of Chili extract was sprayed to 5 termites and were observed that the termites did not die. The same procedures were repeated three times and same results were observed. The last application was using the mixture of 2.5mL Makabuhai extract and 2.5 mL Chili extract sprayed onto 5 termites. This time, the termites died in 1 minute only, faster than the two previous applications done. RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS Table 1. Makabuhai Extract Application on the Termites Test Quantity Result Test 1 5 mL 5 Termites died 2 5 mL 5 Termites died More than 3 5 mL 5 Termites died 1 minute Table 3. Table 2. Thus, this study offers an effective means of lessening the destructive ants and termites yet cheaper than the commercial insecticides in stores. This study also offers an environmental-friendly kind of insecticides and easier made kind because the materials used can be found in our backyards and gardens. RECOMMENDATIONS The researcher recommends the use of Makabuhai and chili extract as an effective household insecticide which is environmentally safe and cheaper than the commercial insecticides in stores and a solution in eradicating destructive ants and termites. To further improve the study, the researcher also recommends thorough observation of its effectivity by applying the insecticide to different pests.
