Speaker Notes for Presentation Do video games affect the mental health of kids and adults I had two main reasons for choosing this topic in particular: ● ● Firstly, I myself am a keen video game player and throughout my life I have spent many hours delving deep into the realms of a variety of games. I was particularly interested in researching the effect of videogames on people so I not only so I could reach an accurate conclusion at the end of the project but also so I would gain valuable information for myself throughout the project. Furthermore I wanted to see if video games had a different effect on adults as opposed to kids because it may be like alcohol in the way that alcohol does more harm to kids than adults when they drink it. Also, I chose to do this topic as opposed to others due to the heavily negative media coverage it has received over the past few years. I wanted to see for myself if the repetitive negativity that surrounds video games is true. All the time we are being told about the harm that videogames can do to us but never how it can improve our My first aim is to come to a conclusion and answer the initial question I chose at the start of the project. This includes covering the physical and mental effects of videogames as well investigating the effect of videogames on kids as opposed to adults Furthermore, I wanted to develop my organisational skills throughout the course of the project because if I was able to plan better, then I could also be more organised and comfortable with workloads Firstly I have visited a range of websites such as reuters.com and quora in order to gather valuable facts and statistics for my essay. I generally visited safe websites with less bias towards one side of the argument Also, I used news articles, reports and leaflets so I have a range of resources for my final essay Finally I used myself for the research of the project. Each time I played for a period of time I wrote down the period of time I had been playing as well how I felt physically after the session All my sources will be CRAP tested before I can use them in my essay to ensure that I can come to an unbiased conclusion I have learnt a number of lessons throughout the course of the project. I have learnt how to plan my time effectively so that I am not overloaded with work at stages of the project Also, I have learnt how to evaluate my sources effectively so that I can choose which sources are most valuable and reliable for my essay. By using the CRAP test I was able to check which sources would be most valuable because I need to create a balanced argument with unbiased points of view Another thing I have learnt is that I have to make my notes concise and through the course of the planning stages of the project I have improved my ability to note down only the important details. Finally, I have improved a number of my essay writing skills such as planning, redrafting and structuring my essay There is no doubt that there are arguments for both sides of my questions and therefore it may change the way in which I see videogames. Regardless of my conclusion I feel that the large amount of research I have put into the project will make me more educated on the topic of videogames and mental health and will make an impact on me. For example my research into the negative effects of video games may persuade me to play less
