I used to run a volunteer group in Vietnam aiming at assisting underprivileged children of the SOS
village with their studies. I made my decision to start the volunteer group after a visit to the village
where I witnessed their poor living conditions. In the first few weeks, we encountered myriad
problems. It was hard to choose a time when everyone was free. We were also short in members
to split the children into smaller groups so it was challenging to decide what to teach them and
help every single child. We decided to make posters and hang them on our schools’ hallway to
recruit new members and made a Facebook page to manage our club and discuss problems. After
a few weeks, we gradually solved our troubles and our group started to get more organised and
efficient. It was amazing to see how the children improved so quickly. It was a meaningful
experience through which I honed my leadership, confidence and teamwork skills. I appreciate my
fortune being born into my family and I hope that I can help them even more in the future when I
come back to Vietnam being more capable.
