from attack and
to drive away
invaders.

Carausius, the
commander of the
Classis Britannica
rebelled against the
Emperor Diocletian
and set himself as the
Emperor in Britain.
The worst attack
● AD 367
● The Picts, Saxons and
Scots launched attacks
at the same time, and
the weakened Roman
legions couldn’t resist
them.
The boundaries of Roman Britain were shrinking
● The Count of the Saxon Shore was killed in battle and London was
besieged /bɪˈsiːdʒd/
● People were afraid of invaders until Emperor Theodosius restored order.
● In AD 383 Emperor Maximus took more troops from Britain. The Pics
saw this as an opportunity, they attacked Hadrian’s wall and overran it.
● Some British Chiefs invited Saxons leaders to settle if they promised to
protect them.
● In AD 407 the last Roman soldiers left Britain. The Emperor told the
Britons they would have to defend themselves against the Saxons.
● Rome was surrounded by enemies and Roman Britain was at an end.
