Ma rencontre avec Natalie a eu lieu alors que j’étais encore assistante et qu’elle était déjà l’artiste exceptionnelle que l’on connaît. Pourtant, ce qui m’a frappée, c’est son incroyable ouverture d’esprit, sa réceptivité, son perfectionnisme et sa fantaisie. Dotée d’un sens harmonique inné, sa capacité à improviser avec naturel ne demandait qu’à être exploitée, tout comme son art de la couleur intimait qu’elle explore le répertoire baroque encore peu abordé par elle. 5 Nous nous sommes retrouvées sur Alcina d’Haendel que nous avons préparé ensemble et sommes devenues amies. La simplicité de Natalie, son abord sans ambages et sa générosité ont fait que c’est tout naturellement à elle que j’ai fait appel pour remplacer au pied levé la soprano prévue à l’un de mes premiers concerts en tant que chef d’orchestre, quand celle-ci m’a fait défaut au dernier instant. Quel remplacement de luxe ! © Marianne Rosenstiehl Alain Lanceron était présent à ce concert et de là est née l’idée de nos premiers projets discographiques et de tout un champ de répertoire à aborder ensemble avec bonheur. A partir de là, nous avons donné tant au concert qu’au disque ou à la scène Bach, Monteverdi, Haendel, Rameau. Natalie a extraordinairement défendu cette musique, et comme pour tout ce qu’elle touche, avec une grâce et un esprit sans pareils. Je suis fière et heureuse d’avoir pu partager avec Natalie tant de moments de bonheur musicaux. Cet album en témoigne. Emmanuelle Haïm 5 5 NATALIE IS LIKE A MUSIC SISTER TO ME I first met Natalie when I was still a musical assistant and she was already the exceptional artist whom we know today. Yet what struck me most about her was her incredible openness of spirit, her readiness to embrace new ideas, her perfectionism and her imagination. With her innate feeling for harmony, she has a natural gift for improvisation that calls out to be put to good use, in the same way as her feeling for colour makes her ideally suited to the Baroque repertoire, which was still fairly new to her at that stage. 6 The next time we met was during rehearsals for a performance of Handel’s Alcina, and it was then that we became friends. Natalie’s simplicity, her straightforwardness and her generosity meant that it was naturally her that I got in touch with when I had to find a replacement soprano at very short notice, at one of the first concerts that I conducted myself, after being let down at the last minute. What a luxury stand-in! Alain Lanceron was present at this concert, and it was then that we developed the idea for our first recording projects and the area of repertoire that we were keen to explore together. Since then, we have performed Bach, Monteverdi, Handel and Rameau together - in the concert hall, in the recording studio and in the theatre. Natalie is a great champion of this music, and as with everything else she does, she sings it with a grace and a spirit that are second to none. I’m proud and happy to have been able to share so many wonderful musical moments with Natalie, and this album bears witness to them.
