History of the World in Six Glasses Summer Work
1. Beer promoted social interactions and was also used as a currency at one point in time.
2. The history of beer illustrates that the drink was highly integrated into society, by relating
to religion, jobs and interactions between people.
3. The author uses ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs and Mesopotamian pictograms. He also
uses ancient stories such as the Epic of Gilgamesh.
4. Beer was used as payment and also used as a medicinal item/
5. Since it could not be preserved people could not move far from the source of beer. Since
they began to create farms and cities man slowly began to become civilized.
6. The relationship between beer and writing is that it was the first known written recipe.
It’s relationship between commerce and health is that was used as payment and also at
times used as a medicinal item.
1. Wine was used in Greece and Rome as sign of being more civilized. Also it was used as
a disinfectant.
2. It was used by the Greeks to show their social class. It also brought people together.
3. Drinking foreign wines were a sign of being in a higher class, and those who drank
domestic wine were seen as inferior.

4. Wine was consumed being diluted with water to ensure that they did get drunk. This
displays that the Greeks thought of the drunken state as dishonorable.
5. Romans used wine to define people into social classes with more expensive wines being
drunk by higher class citizens. The Greeks used wine to bring people together and enjoy
themselves.
6. Wine has been around as long as the earliest of European empires. Wine was used as a
disinfectant, thus increasing the lifespan of the people. Also Wine was used in
Christianity and Paganism.
1. Distilled Spirits come from the Muslims who designed a way for more alcohol to be in
less of the drink.
2. Spirits assisted the Triangle trade because rum and slaves would be sold the colonies in
turn for molasses and sugar.
3. To increase production slaves were introduced to make spirits.
4. Spirits gave an advantage to the British because they would last much longer.
5. Spirits helped fight Scurvy which in turn made the British better sailors.
6. The production of spirits employed many people in the Americas and also the beverage
lasted longer than anything else at the time.
7. The first taxes that began to anger the American Colonists was taxes on rum and
molasses.
8. SPirits made people become drunk in a much shorter amount of time than other
beverages. Also it increased the need for more slaves.

idea back to Europe.
2. Coffee energized many people and also did not get the intoxicated.
3. The Arabs, Dutch, and French had control of the market because they were the only
nations with access to beans.
4. Coffee Houses were a place where scientists would gather and discuss topics of interest.
5. Coffee Houses were used as makeshift stock exchanges.
6. Coffee Houses in France at the time were a place where people would talk about their
disgust for the government and slowly the idea of revolution began to brew.
1. The Second Emperor of China brewed the first cup of tea, tea reached Europe in the
beginning of the 17th century.
2. Tea was ceremonial in Asia while in Europe it slowly became a standard drink.
3. At the time Tea was very expensive in Europe.
4. Once open trade with China began, tea was much more readily available in England so
the common man could also drink it
5. Workers were offered tea breaks throughout the industrial revolution.
6. The British East India Company was able to take a 1.4 Million Pound Loan, become taxfree and create a monopoly on Tea sale because most of the government's revenue was
from tea.
7. The Opium War is what allowed England to have open trade with China because England
defeated China.
8. England grew tea in India providing jobs to Indians.

1. Coca-Cola was originally a tonic.
2. It was used to calm people and sharpen their senses, the additive was cocaine.
3. Coca-Cola improved morale for everyone in the army because it reminded them of home.
Also other nations tried the drink and loved it. Also Soviet General Georgy Zhukov loved
Coca-Cola but could not receive it easily. He had to get the beverage without the brown
dye to make it appear like vodka.
4. Coke was seen as a product of the enemy to the Soviets.
5. The military brought Coke everywhere so it spread throughout the globe.
6. Coca-Cola represent Capitalism and Freedom.
1. Scientific advancements made water a safe beverage after millennials.
2. Tap water is more regulated.
3. Over 700 million people do not have access to safe water.
4. IT has created war and peace in different circumstances.
1. The book uses the different drinks as different eras in human history.
2. They all bring people together at some point.
3. The drinks become accepted because of all their other values including the medicinal
purposes.
4. The word civilized is used as a synonym of man being together.
5. Vodka and Milk are two influential beverages that are not discussed in the book.
