P RACTICES AND REASONS FOR SELF MEDICATION IN MEDICAL STUDENTS M A H N O O R F AT I M A FA 1 8 - R P M - 0 1 4 FLOW CHART INTRODUCTION • What? – This study was conducted to assess the magnitude and reasons of self-medication among medical students of Rawalpindi Medical College • Why? – Keeping in view this need of the hour, the purpose of our study is to find out the enormity of practices and reasons of self-medication in medical students of a public medical college of Rawalpindi which will subsequently give us an overview of the trends and reasons of selfmedication in medical students in our region and ultimately generate data which can be of profound value in holding the reigns of this ever growing problem LITERATURE REVIEW METHODOLOGY • The data was collected using the technique of stratified random sampling. • Basis – Gender – Academic year • Frameword – Enrollment lists PRELIMINARY DATA • Total students = 125 (m) + 125 (f) = 250 • 238 had the idea about the topic • 95% people admitted to self medication STATEMENT OF LIMITATION • The audience of research were from a limited area. – One hospital in Rawalpindi • Who can this give the idea of trend of self-medication? – When it comes to medical students it is something different since medical students have much more knowledge about medicines, their indications and adverse effects. RESULTS CONCLUSION • Self medication is widely practiced among medical students and they take wide range of medicines without any formal consultation with health care providers. • Finding – Many students are unaware of the adverse effects of self-medication – For this purpose the college can arrange “Students’ Awareness Programs” to spread awareness among students THANKS
