Families By: Jadeson Bynoe From the beginning of the Bible in the book of Genesis, we start to see that God places emphasis on relationships and reproduction. This is seen when He makes the sea creatures, birds and every living thing that moves. He also works with the Holy Spirit and Jesus to make man in His image. He also says after He created man, “Male and female He created them”. Even the plants as they yield seed to make new plants show that they reproduce after their own kind. It is clear to see that from the beginning God is interested in families. Hence He gives the instructions be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. In the Bible, there are many examples of families. E.g. (Abraham and Sarah, Jacob and Rachel, Job, Jesus and Mary and Joseph) However, I want to focus on the beginning of the Bible with some points, which God highlighted about families. In Families, God desires: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) Unity Identity Follow Instructions/Fulfill Purpose Reproduction/Multiplication Love 1 1) Unity: God worked together with the Holy Spirit and Jesus to establish the first family. God expects us to model this in our relationships with our family members. Genesis 1:26-27 26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all[b] the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them 2) Identity: God has given each of us an identity. Our families/lives must model after His likeness. His character, His dislikes and likes must be instilled in our families. Genesis 1:26 “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness;” 3) Follow Instructions/Fulfill Purpose: Each family has been given a specific purpose by God to fulfill. It was told to Adam in the garden what He should do. We must seek God for the specific instructions He has for our families. Genesis 1:28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” 2 4) Reproduction/Multiplication: Each family has been given the instruction to be fruitful and multiply. This is not just being fruitful and multiplying with children but also being fruitful and multiplying the purposes of God in the earth. The principles of God, which you have as a family, are to be taught to others. This is a form of disciplining, as one person will reach another. Our lives should be lived worthy of being emulated by others. Genesis 1:28 28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” 5) Love: God expects families to love one another the way He shows us love. John 13:34-35 34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” 1 Corinthians 13:1-8 13 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing. 4 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; 5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; 6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all 3 things, endures all things. 8 Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away. 4
