What characteristics do you use to determine the status of the object? OBJECTIVE: To help students observe and identify the characteristics living things display, then compare and contrast those to characteristics displayed by non-living things. SAFETY WARNINGS: DO NOT: harm any living objects, open ANY containers, or damage ANY of the items. DAY 1 MATERIALS: up to 24 objects to observe 1 Student lab sheet per person INSTRUCTIONS: 1. 2. 3. 4. Obtain one student lab sheet for each member of your group. Wait until the teacher explains where you will begin and how you will rotate. You will be classifying each object as either living, non-living or dead. When instructed to do so, go to your lab area and record the following information for each object: (a) name of object, (b) status: living, non-living, or dead and (c) reason for your answer. 5. When the teacher gives the signal move to the next station and repeat the process for all objects at the station. DO NOT move until told to do so. 6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until you have classified all of the objects at each station. When you are through, return to your seats. 7. Get out a sheet of paper for discussion notes. STATIONS: 1.
