SOCIAL USAGE ON STUDENT LEARNING
INTERESTS

ABSTRACT
Social media is an online media where users can easily participate, share and
create content. Indonesia itself is a country with a population that is actively using
social media. Indonesia is included as an active social media user country. In 2016, the
following are the most widely used social media in Indonesia, LINE, this research is
focused on social media users LINE. This study was used to analyze the effect of using
LINE social media on student learning interests. It was found that LINE social media
had an effect on students' interest in learning, with the use of e-learning on social media
LINE could increase student learning interest.

1. INTRODUCTION
Social media is an online media where users can easily participate, share and create content.
Indonesia itself is a country with a population that actively uses social media, especially the
population included in the Y and Z generation. Generation grouping based on the birth year is
started in the 1960s when the younger generation had a 180 degree view of the older generation.
At present, the generation of generations is still continuing from generation to generation, still
continuing from the Baby Boomers generation, X, Y, Z and Alpa with different views, ways
of learning and principles (Supriyanto, 2016).
Indonesia is included as an active social media user country. In 2016, the following are the
most widely used social media in Indonesia, one of the financial media, LINE. LINE is a
communication application that allows you to make free calls and send free messages anytime
and anywhere. LINE can be used on several platforms such as iPhone, Android, Windows
Phone, and PC (OS Windows / Mac). Some of the features provided by LINE are: Voice calls

and video calls that LINE can use for free,more expressive chat with more than 10,000 stickers
and emoticons. LINE stickers can be obtained from the LINE store, both for free stickers and
paid stickers, can easily share photos, videos, voice messages, contacts, and location info,
timeline that serves to share text, photos and videos with user friends. Every post on the
timeline can be liked and commented on by other users, keep functions as a place for storing
messages, photos and favorite videos, making it easier when looking for data in the future, can
add friends in various ways such as using QR codes, via telephone numbers, using LINE ID or
using the Shake feature.
In this research, the scope of this study is to analyzing the social use of line media as a
learning method that will be obtained based on the results of the questionnaire.
2. MATERIAL AND METHODS
In order to test the research hypothesis, it is necessary to first identify the research variables.
According to Sugiyono (2012,59), independent or independent variables are variables that
influence or are the cause of the change or the emergence of the dependent variable. Dependent
or independent variables are variables influenced or that becomes a result, because of the
existence of independent variables. If the value of the independent variable is manipulated, it
will affect the value of the dependent variable. in this research :
1. Free variable: Use of the LINE Application
2. Dependent variables: Interest in Student Learning on Social Media LINE.
Population is a generalization area consisting of objects or subjects that have certain
quantities and characteristics determined by researchers to be studied and then drawn
conclusions (Sugiyono, 2012).
The population limit for this study is high school / vocational high school students in South
Jakarta who are members of South Jakarta's PASKIBRAKA 2018, which actively use LINE
social media.
3. THEORITICAL ANALYSIS
In this study, the method used is the scale method. Scale according to Azwar (2004: 5) is a
method in the form of a list of statements
Submitted to respondents and his interpretation of the statement is a projection of his
feelings. This study uses two scales, namely the scale of validity and reliability of measuring
instruments.
a. Validity
Validity means how far the accuracy and accuracy of a measuring instrument in performing its
measuring functions (Azwar, 2004: 5). Whereas according to Sugiharto and Sitinjak, validity
relates to a variable measuring what should be assessed (Wahyuni, 2014).
b. Reliability of measuring instruments
According to Azwar (2004: 4) reliability is an index that shows the extent to which a measuring
instrument can provide consistent and reliable or reliable results. Testing of valid items
measuring instruments used by using Cronbach Alpha reliability testing techniques. The
reasons for using the Cronbach Alpha technique in testing this reliability are:

1. Alpha correlation is one of the reliability test techniques that is currently the most
widely used and reliable.
2. Based on the Internal Consistency technique
3. With Alpha coefficients can be known whether one item with another support each
other.
The method used to analyze the data in this study is a quantitative method with statistical
techniques to simplify the data into forms that are easier to read and interpret. The data analysis
technique used to test the relationship of the influence of social media LINE as an independent
variable with Interest in Student Learning as a dependent variable using the Product Moment
correlation technique from Pearson. Product Moment Correlation is a correlation technique
used to find relationships and the influence and proof of the hypothesis of the relationship
between the independent variable and the dependent variable (Sugiyono, 2003:
212).Assumptions that must be met to be able to use Product Moment (Sugiyono, 2003: 213),
namely:
1. Both variables both predictors and criteria have distributions that tend to be normal.
2. The relationship between predictors and criteria forms a straight line because of the
occurrence of linear relationships.
4. RESULT AND DISCUSSIONS
Research on the Effects of Social Media Lines on Student Learning Interests. The research
subjects that will be used are as many as 30 high school / vocational school students in the
Jakarta area
South which is incorporated in PASKIBRAKA, South Jakarta in 2018. Based on the testing
of measuring instruments, it will find out the items that are fallible or valid so that it will further
facilitate and strengthen further research.
There are two variables that are used as measuring instruments, the dependent variable (use
of the LINE application) and the dependent variable (Interest in Student Learning). Based on
the questionnaire that has been distributed, the results are as follows.
A. Test Validity and Reliability
Tests conducted on the results of questionnaires that have been obtained include validity test,
reliability test using SPSS for Windows Release 16.0 program calculation
a. Validity test
Validity test is used to determine the validity level of the statements used in the questionnaire
by comparing r count with r table, provided that:
- If r count ≥ r table then Valid
- If r count ≤ r table then no
Valid
The value of r table or also called critical value is obtained from table r. To obtain a critical
value from r table can use DF = N-2, N is the number of samples, DF = 30 - 2 = 28, and the
significant level used is two tailed 0.05 so that r table = 0.37.

From the table above, it can be concluded that out of 21 statements, there are 4 invalid
statements, namely statements 1.4.8 and 12, so it is not feasible to be used as an item in the
questionnaire.

From table 4, it can be concluded that out of 21 statements there are 2 invalid statements
namely statements 11 and 17 so that they are not feasible to be used as items in the
questionnaire.
b. Reliability Test
Reliability tests are used to determine whether the statements used in this questionnaire can
be used again for the next questionnaire and will give the same results. The criteria for stating
that the statement is reliable are as follows:
- If Cronbach Alpha> 0.6 then Reliable
- If Croanbach Alpha is <0.6 then it is not reliable

LINE Variable Reliability Test
Based on the results of the LINE Reliability Variable test in Figure 1, the Cronbach Alpha>
Alpha value is 0.858> 0.6, which means that the statements in the LINE variable are reliable.

Based on the results of testing the reliability of learning interest variables in Figure 2, the
Cronbach Alpha value of 0.900 is obtained. This value indicates that Cronbach Alpha> Alpha
is 0.900> 0.6, which means that the statements in the interest in learning interest are reliable.
Normality test
The normality test is a test conducted to measure whether the selected sample is taken from a
population that is normally distributed. Data normality testing can be done directly for both
variables, the data can be said to be normally distributed if p value> α where α = 0.05.
From the results of normality testing in Figures 3 and 4, the value of the p values for var_FB
and var_MB are taken from the Shapiro-Wilk column. This is because the number of samples
used in this study is
30 samples, while the Kolmogorov-Smirnov method is used if the sample used is more than
50 samples, then the following conclusions are obtained:
- Var_FB: p value (0.887)> 0.05 then it is normally distributed
- Var_MB: p value (0,140)> 0,05 then normal distribution
b. Linearity Testing
Linear Test is
testing is done to determine whether the dependent variable and independent variables have a
significant relationship or not. Linearity tests are performed using the Compare Means
function> Mean.
The hypothesis used for linearity testing is as follows:
- H0: there is no significant relationship between LINE variables and learning interest
variables
- H1: there is a significant relationship between LINE variables and learning interest
variables.
With testing criteria:
- H0 will be accepted if Sig. Deviation From Linearity <0.05
- H0 will be rejected if Sig.Deviation From Linearity> 0.05

Based on the results of linearity in figure 5, the Sig.Deviation from Linearity = 0.707 value
is obtained, so that the conclusions on linearity testing are Sig. Deviation from linearity> 0.05,
meaning H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted. So it can be concluded that there is a significant
relationship between line variables with interest in learning interest.
With testing criteria:
- H0 will be accepted if Significance
> 0.05
- H0 will be rejected if Significance
<0.05
From the results of the Linear Regression analysis in Figure 6, the value of t = 3.148 is
obtained with the value of Sig. t = 0.004, Significance means <0.05 so it is concluded that H0
is rejected and H1 is accepted, meaning that the e-learning learning method using social media
LINE has an influence on interest in learning.
5. CONCLUSION
Based on the results of the study it can be concluded that the use of LINE as a learning medium
influences student learning interest. This is evidenced by the hypothesis testing that has been
done and obtained a significance value of 0.004 and smaller than the value of α of 0.05 so that
hypothesis H0: There is no effect of using social media LINE (Var_LINE) on student learning
interest rejected and hypothesis H1: "There is influence the use of social media LINE
(Var_LINE) on students' interest in learning is accepted.
With such results, it can be concluded that actually learning with social media LINE can
increase student learning interest.
