AKILI LP NAME OF TEACHER: CLASS: ONE COMPETENCE: ENGLISH READING week 10/1 DATE: 24/01/2019 TIME: 40 mins PERIOD: 3rd period NUMBER OF PUPILS REGISTERED PRESENT Boys Girls Total Boys Girls Total 12 13 25 11 13 24 SPECIFIC COMPETENCE: Phonemic awareness (awareness that language is made up of words and single sounds) MAIN ACTIVITY: within several periods, a pupil should be able to identify words with two syllables SPECIFIC ACTIVITY: Within a period of 40 minutes, a pupil should be able to identify words with two syllables Rules: 1. 2. 3. 4. Every syllable has one vowel sound The number of vowel sounds is equal to the number of syllables Diphthongs are counted as one vowel Silent vowels are not counted as vowels e.g. home Procedures -Count the vowels in the word -Subtract any silent vowels like the silent ‘e’ at the end of a word e.g. Home, come, gone -Subtract one vowel from every diphthong – diphthongs only count as one vowel sound e.g. Count, sound, mount, vibe, pine -The number of vowel sounds left is the same as the number of syllables Examples - The word ‘came’ has 2 vowels, but the ‘e’ is silent, leaving one vowel sound and one syllable AKILI LP - The word ‘outside’ has 4 vowels, but the ‘e’ is silent and the ‘ou’ is a diphthong which counts as only one vowel sound, so this word has only two vowel sounds and therefore two syllables TEACHING AIDS: one syllable words, two syllable words, three syllable words REFERENCE: English Writing, Students Book 1, TIE, DSM, page 1 - 3 LESSON DEVELOPMENT STAGE MINUTES INTRODUCTION 5 mins DEVELOPING COMPETENCE 15 mins REINFORCEMENT 15 mins TEACHING ACTIVITIES Use brainstorming method to identify prior competence of syllable by asking them to count the vowels in words like baba and kaka -facilitating pupils to count vowel sounds in words -facilitating pupils to subtract silent vowels -Facilitating pupils to subtract one vowel from every diphthong -facilitating pupils to tell the number of syllables in words -facilitating the pupils to identify two syllable words LEARNING LEARNING ACTIVITIES INDICATORS Counting the Vowel sounds to vowel sounds be counted -counting vowels -subtracting silent vowels -subtracting one vowel in every diphthong -telling the number of syllables -vowels to be counted -silent vowels to be subtracted -one vowel to be subtracted in every diphthong - telling the number of syllables Identifying two syllable words Identification of two syllable AKILI LP CONCLUSION 5 mins from a list of one, two and three syllable words -ask a question on what they have learnt. -appoint one pupil to give summary of the lesson words to be done -telling what they have learnt -giving summary of the lesson -telling what they have learnt to be done -summary of the lesson to be given REFLECTION: I made efforts to apply interactive teaching and learning methods to make pupils cooperate and learn effectively. Pupils were excited with the methods because they allowed using their prior knowledge to develop the intended competence. I was amazed that they were reluctant to go out during break time. However, I had some flaws in classroom management techniques and I exceeded some few minutes of the next period which belonged to a different subject. EVALUATION: The clarification and explanation I gave enabled 38 pupils out of 45 to rope jump. 5 pupils out of 45 were at the beginning level because they failed to understand the explanations. REMARKS: In the next lesson I will improve the way I give instructions and explain concepts to pupils. I will make use of peer teaching techniques to help pupils who perform at beginner level. I will observe classroom and time management skills in order to spend time wisely
