The narrator explains, “police are not yet satisfied with the account Erlone
has given of himself and are of the conviction that he may be linked to the
negro as an accomplice; they feel that the plan of the murder and
kidnapping was too elaborate to be the work of a negro mind”

”Lets play white”, Bigger said referring to a game of play-acting in which
he and his friends initiated the ways and manners of white folks.

”though he had killed on accident, not once did he feel the need to tell
himself, that it had been an accident. He was black and he had been
alone in the room where a white girl had been killed; therefore he had
killed her. That was what everyone would say anyhow, no matter what he


