Are positive geotropic, hydrotropic and are
negatively phototropic.
Their function is to keep the plant fixed in one firm
position in the ground (anchors), the roots also
absorbs water and the minerals obtained from the
soil.
In some plants can be modified for storage of food material
and penetration to host stem.
Root Structure
The external root structure
1. Root Cap
- Multicellular , protects and inner layers of the root.
2. Growing point
- Made up of cells that actively divide by mitosis
(Meristematic cells)
3. Region of elongation
- The cells comes from the growing point begin to
elongate.
4. Root hair
- The root hair region has root hairs, which absorb
water and mineral salts.
- Internally the cells in this region begin to
differentiate into epidermis, parenchyma,
sclerenchyma, xylem and phloem.
5. Matured region
- Consists of side roots and fully differentiated
tissues.
