The root LIFE PROCESSES IN PLANTS & ANIMALS 05 APRIL 2019 Anatomy Dicotyledonous Plants Angiosperms which are characterized by fruits and flowersMonocots and dicots -Plants: Root, stem, leaves and fruits/ plants. The root Are positive geotropic, hydrotropic and are negatively phototropic. Their function is to keep the plant fixed in one firm position in the ground (anchors), the roots also absorbs water and the minerals obtained from the soil. In some plants can be modified for storage of food material and penetration to host stem. Root Structure The external root structure 1. Root Cap - Multicellular , protects and inner layers of the root. 2. Growing point - Made up of cells that actively divide by mitosis (Meristematic cells) 3. Region of elongation - The cells comes from the growing point begin to elongate. 4. Root hair - The root hair region has root hairs, which absorb water and mineral salts. - Internally the cells in this region begin to differentiate into epidermis, parenchyma, sclerenchyma, xylem and phloem. 5. Matured region - Consists of side roots and fully differentiated tissues. Water and mineral movement via root hair
