It is seen as an integral part of studies where students are attached to existing companies or organizations in the real world environments. They are required to acquire practical skills and relate them to the real world environment. It helps instill the students the preferred work attitudes and professionalism through interaction with people within the organization and observe their future role in the industry. It also provides an opportunity to integrate relative practical experience with theory and thereby getting students ready for the job market. This report serves to provide a concise and vivid account of the exposure that I gained during my attachment period at Red Wing Seed Company, which started on 3rd September to 5th December 2018. It primarily focuses on activities that I was involved during my attached period at the company. It depicts the valuable knowledge I gained through active participation during my stay at the company. On 3rd September I reported at Red Wing Limited and was given a tour of the farm that included i. The offices which houses , the dams, propagation house, the seed house, the chemical store, 6 CHAPTER TWO: OBJECTIVES OF THE ATTACHMENT Industrial training provides the impetus for the students to comprehend and appreciate real-life working experiences. Students may realize their ambition and ascertain their career path from the experience gained during industrial training. The attachment provides students the opportunity to meet and network with people in the industry, and the industry the opportunity to identify talents and potential skilled workers. The objectives of the Industrial Training are as follows: To provide an opportunity for students to discover what they have learned about and familiarize with industry of their discipline. Students will acquire interpersonal skills through meeting with professionals in their field of study. To provide an opportunity for students to observe real-life practices and implementation of theoretical lessons and principles. Students will acquire practical skills and experience working on projects and alongside industry experts. To provide the opportunity for the industry to identify potential employees from among the industrial trainees and to feedback comments on the program. To ensure coursework and training programs satisfy the expectations of the industry, and ensure the programs are relevant and up to date. Overall, students will gain experience in the following: Organizational skills and professional awareness. Ability to work under supervision and directions. Efficiently completing tasks, fostering good relationship with seniors and subordinates. Communication skills and contribution to company. 7 CHAPTER THREE: ATTACHMENT DETAILS 3.1. Students main objectives The following are the objectives I was involved in: i. The first two week I was attached at the various greenhouses within the farm. That included flowers such as vinca, geranium and peltetum. For vinca; Vinca plant defination Vinca occupies greenhouses 3, 18 and 1. I was involved in work on all the greenhouse that contain vinca plant. The various activities that included emasculation, collecting of male flowers from the pollen house used to provide pollen used to pollinate the female vinca flowers, applying pollen on female vinca flowers, collecting mature seed pods, scouting for pest and diseases, weeding and other maintenances on the plant. For Geranuim; Geranium defination Geranium occupies greenhouses 4, 5,6,7,8 and 22. I was involved in greenhouse 4, 5, 6 and 22. The activities included emasculating, pollination, seed harvesting, moving of big bags (plant translocation), and other activities. For peltetum Peltetum definition Peltetum occupies greenhouses 9, 10,11,12,13. I was involved in greenhouse 9, 10, 11 and 12. The activities included emasculating, seed harvesting, scouting for pest and diseases, facilitate measurement of soil moisture and other activities.// sorting health peltetum and dumping dried ii. Updating the companies Plant allocation data. Spending two weeks doing work around the farm prepared me for carrying out the next activity. It involved updating the pant location data and maintaining it to reflect the current information and position of each individual plants around the farm. (Include a picture and explain further) iii. Filling of appraisal forms. The activities involved elimination of errors on individual forms, keying in of appraisal data in Microsoft excel, calculating averages and percentages, filling of appraisal forms. iv. Assisting in cost accounting. The activities involved calculating costs incurred in individual greenhouses and the various department within the company. The costs involved chemical costs, input costs, employee costs and operational costs. v. Preparing a greenhouse in preparation for capsicum planting. Since its fairly small company, I was able to be involved in most of activities taking place within the organization and was fortunate to be involved in establishment of capsicum plant in greenhouse 14, 15, 16 and 17. The greenhouse was left abandoned after a virus infection months ago and the owner decided to grown the capsicum plants under some needed change and was involved in implementing most of the activities. The activities included; a) Deconstruction of the main entrance. Involved the removal of the entire structure with the aim of later designing a bigger structure that would allow them capsicum team more control over the variables to prevent future virus 8 infections and later reuse the material used previously such as metal poles, profiles, polyethylene cover vi. Team building activities. I was fortunate to be involved team building that included training in activities tag of war, athletics// relay but did not make it into the final team. i. ii. i. 3.2. Successes of the attachment Rewarding in understanding their core business and the way the company obtains its revenue. Gained knowledge of what it takes to prepare a greenhouse in preparation for growing an export seeds// hygiene 3.3 Failures of the attachment Since it is a small company, it lacked sufficient facilities especially in the information technology area thus did not receive enough exposure in that particular area. 3.3.
