HP StorageWorks controller enclosure replacement instructions About this document This document provides the procedure for replacing an HSV400 or HSV450 controller enclosure. Before you begin Observe the following precautions when replacing a controller. CAUTION: Parts can be damaged by electrostatic discharge. Use proper anti-static protection. Refer to the documentation that shipped with your system for additional information. Fault monitoring software from HP (WEBES) provides a recommended solution. • Check status using HP Command View EVA: 1. In the navigation pane, select Storage system > Hardware > Controller Enclosure > Controller. 2. The status is displayed in the Operational State field. An (Failed) would indicate a fault that may operational state of require a replacement. 3. To help identify the correct controller, click Locate > Locate On. Flashing green during boot. Solid green LED after boot. 3 Link to the other array controller. Solid green indicates a connection. Amber indicates the controllers are not connected. 4 Disk drive status. Solid green when devices and loops are present. Amber indicates a drive problem. 5 Battery status. Solid green indicates all fan units are normal. Amber indicates one or more battery units have failed. 6 Blue LED used to identify a specific controller enclosure. Figure 2 Removing the front bezel NOTE: To provide clarity, the controller enclosure is shown out of the cabinet in subsequent figures showing component removal. 4. Remove the operator control panel (OCP). a. Squeeze the OCP latch tabs (1, Figure 3) and swing the panel out until fully open (2). CAUTION: Handle the OCP by its metal frame only. This ensures that the electronic components are not damaged by static discharge. b. Grasp the OCP by its metal frame and pull it out of the enclosure (3). Removing components from a controller enclosure 1. Halt I/O to the controller enclosure being replaced with HP Command View EVA: a. In the navigation pane, select the array. The Initialized Storage System Properties window opens. b. Click the Shut down tab. The Shutdown Options window opens. c. In the Controller Shutdown section, select the controller to power down, and click Power down. 2. Disconnect the Fibre Channel, serial (RJ45), and power cables from the rear of the controller enclosure. Ensure they are marked to facilitate reconnecting later. 3. Remove the front bezel by grasping the bezel at each end and pulling it off the enclosure (Figure 2). Figure 3 Removing the OCP 5. Remove the cache batteries. Some controller enclosure models have a cache battery located behind the removed OCP. a. Move the battery mounting latch (1, Figure 4) to the right and grasp the pull handle. b. Position one hand under the battery, and pull the battery out of the enclosure (2). Page 2 a. Loosen the two thumbscrews (1, Figure 7) that secure the rear access panel to the enclosure, and remove the access panel (2). b. Pull the memory card out of its holder (3). Retain this card for use in the replacement enclosure. NOTE: The memory card contains the controller operating firmware. It is important that the removed memory card be used in the replacement enclosure. Figure 4 Removing a cache battery 6. Remove the controller blowers. a. Move the blower latch (1, Figure 5) to the right. b. Position one hand under the blower, and pull the blower out of the enclosure (2). Figure 7 Removing the memory card 9. Loosen the thumbscrews (1, Figure 8) that secure the controller enclosure to the cabinet. Figure 5 Removing a controller blower 7. Remove the power supplies from the rear of the controller enclosure. a. Move the power supply latch to the left (1, Figure 6) and grasp the handle. b. Position one hand under the power supply, and pull the power supply out of the enclosure (2). Figure 8 Removing the enclosure from the cabinet CAUTION: The controller enclosure is heavy. Two people are required to remove the enclosure from the cabinet to prevent injury. 10. Remove the controller enclosure from the cabinet (2, Figure 8). Figure 6 Removing the power supplies 8. Remove the memory card. Page 3 • Verify the controller health green LED is lit (see Table 1). • From HP Command View EVA, navigate to the component as described in the Verifying component failure section, and check the Installing components into a replacement controller enclosure 1. A blank label is provided on the replacement controller enclosure (1, Figure 9) above the OCP. Record the product number and serial number from the controller being replaced onto the replacement controller label to ensure the continuation of service entitlement. Using two people to lift the replacement controller enclosure, attach the enclosure onto the cabinet rails, and secure the enclosure to the cabinet by tightening the front thumbscrews on each side. 3. Remove the rear memory card access panel, and insert the memory card that was previously removed from the controller enclosure being replaced. Reattach the access panel. 4. Slide the two power supplies into the back of the controller enclosure until they are fully seated. 5. Slide the two blowers into the front enclosure slots until their mounting latches engage. 6. Slide each cache battery into the front of the enclosure until fully seated and the mounting latches engage. 7. Slide the OCP into the front of the enclosure and close the front OCP display so that the latch engages on the enclosure. 8. Snap the front bezel onto the front of the enclosure. 9. Move the small form-factor pluggable (SFP) modules from the replaced controller enclosure to the installed controller enclosure. 10. Attach all power, serial, and Fibre Channel cabling to the installed controller enclosure. 11. Power up the installed controller enclosure by pressing the power button on the rear power UID bezel. Verifying proper operation After replacing the controller enclosure, check the following to verify the controller enclosure is operating properly: NOTE: Wait approximately 10 minutes for the system to check the status of components in the enclosure. Page 4 status. It should be (Good).
