Regression with Calculator
Start by turning on your Diagnostics: Hit the 2nd button and then the 0 button (Catalog). Scroll down to DiagnosticOn and
hit enter twice (the calculator should say Done).
To put your data into the calculator hit the STAT button and choose EDIT. If there is already data in the calculator, go to
the top of the List and hit CLEAR and ENTER.
When you put your data in it is important that you keep data points together in L1 and L2.
Once your data is entered into the calculator, hit the STAT button and go to CALC and scroll down to the appropriate
regression. And hit ENTER ENTER. The calculator will give you the basic form of the equation along with the coefficient
values to write the equation. Remember the r2 tells you how well the equation fits the data. (The closer r2 is to 1 the
better.)
You can have the calculator put the equation in to the Y= by …
1. Hit STAT and choose CALC
2. Scroll to the regression of your choice and hit ENTER 1 time
3. Hit the VARS button and choose Y-VARS hit ENTER 3 times
Write the linear, quadratic, and cubic equations that best fit the data. Then determine which is the best fit.

In what year do you predict the number of children receiving Social Security will hit 5,000,000?
