This is in accordance with section 7(2)(a) which specified that “A Graduate Engineer who is registered with the Board may, subject to section 8, take up employment which requires him to perform professional engineering services Engineers in Society Route to be a Graduate Engineer 1. Engineering Student - Taking engineering course in an accredited public/private IHL - A four (4) years duration of study after foundation - Will later be awarded B.Eng,BSc Eng Engineers in Society Route to be a Graduate Engineer 2. Be a Graduate Engineer - A Degree in Engineering Course - Academic Transcript - Processing Fee RM50.00 All document must be certified true copy by the Professional Engineer. Engineers in Society Route to be a Graduate Engineer Engineers in Society Registration for Graduate Engineer Every document submitted must be certified as a true copy by a Professional Engineer who is registered with BEM Engineers in Society A Graduate Engineer All institutions of higher learning in Malaysia have been informed since 2000 that no engineering program with 3 years duration of study would be acceptable for BEM’s recognition or accreditation. Only a 4 years (or more) program is accreditable by the EAC. The BEM however provides a pathway for unrecognized engineering degree holders, but they would only be considered upon completing Master program (taught mode) in related engineering discipline, on a case to case basis Engineers in Society A Graduate Engineer EAC accreditation is to ensure that graduates of the accredited engineering programmes satisfy the minimum academic requirements for registration as a graduate engineer with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) and for admission to graduate membership of IEM. Engineers in Society A Graduate Engineer Are all the engineering programmes (B.Tech) that are conducted by the IHL recognized by BEM? All Engineering Technology programmes conducted by IHL are not accredited by BEM for the purpose of registration with BEM. Graduate with Degree in Engineering Technology is eligible to register as an Engineering Technologist Engineers in Society A Graduate Engineer Engineers in Society A Graduate Engineer Engineers in Society What is engineering? Engineering is the science, skill, and profession of acquiring and applying scientific, economic, social, and practical knowledge, in order to design and also build structures, machines, devices, systems, materials and processes. Engineers in Society What is engineering? One, with engineering qualification who practices engineering is called an engineer, and those licensed to do so may have more formal designations such as Professional Engineer or Chartered Engineer The broad discipline of engineering encompasses a range of more specialized sub disciplines, each with a more specific emphasis on certain fields of application and particular areas of technology. Engineers in Society Disciplines of Engineering Engineering Disciplines Engineering is a broad field that is divided into various disciplines and subdisciplines. The disciplines of engineering can be divided into four main categories : Chemical, Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. Interdisciplinary Engineering There are many different Engineering disciplines and specialisation options which do not fall into any of the main Engineering disciplines. These Interdisciplinary Engineering disciplines are a combination of two or more Engineering disciplines : Energy Engineering, Bio-Process Engineering, Industrial Engineering Engineers in Society Disciplines of Engineering Class Attendance Engineers in Society https://bit.ly/2T1H6cw Engineers in Society Engineering in Malaysia Malaysian Public Works Department (PWD) is the federal government department in Malaysia under Malaysian Ministry of Works which is responsible for construction and maintenance of public infrastructure in Malaysia. List of PWD’s branches : - Building and Structure Branch Road Branch Slope Engineering Branch Electrical Branch Mechanical Branch Military Works Branch Engineers in Society Regulation of Engineers in Malaysia BEM – Board of Engineers Malaysia Was passed by the Parliament to effectively regulate engineering professional practices REA is a law Engineers must register with BEM in order to legally practise. The function of BEM is basically what REA is all about Registration of Engineers Act 1967 (Act 138) Was originally introduced to assist engineers in submission of building plans to local authorities. Malaysia is the first country to have such a law. The REA was amended in 1972, 1973 1974, 1987, 2002, and 2007 for the betterment of local engineering practice. Engineers in Society Professional Engineering Societies Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) Both BEM and IEM are the Professional Engineering Societies in Malaysia Engineers in Society Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) The Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) is a statutory authority founded in 1972 representing the engineering profession in Malaysia. BEM is under the administration of the Ministry of Works and established under the Registration of Engineers Act 1967. The institute is responsible for the maintenance of the registration of engineering Graduates and Professional Engineers. BEM also serves as the controller that determines conduct and ethics for those involved with engineering in Malaysia. Engineers in Society Other Countries Engineers in Society Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) Consists of 17 Board Members, appointed by the Ministry of Works, comprising: • President • 14 Professional Engineers • 5 from public sector • 5 from private practice • 2 from local authority • 2 from private sector • 1 representative from Board of Architects Malaysia • 1 representative from Board of Quantity Surveyors Malaysia • Secretary and Registrar (PE) are ex-officio members Engineers in Society Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) Committees: • Management • Engineers Act • Application • Scale of fees • Professional practice • Examination and qualification • Publication • IT • Monitoring • Quality • Training and education • Engineering and accreditation Engineers in Society 1.
