Chapter I THE PROBLEM (INTRODUCTION) This chapter contains background of the study, review of related literature, conceptual framework, paradigm of the study, statement of the problem, important of the study, and lastly scope and limitation. Background of the Study In todays educational setting, many students are having trouble in constructing Research Paper as a part of their educational performances or school requirements. A Research Paper is a comprehensive essay that students are required to submit at the end of their academic semester. As Healey (2005a) suggests, the greatest impacts on student’s learning and understanding of research arose from their experiences of doing research -based learning project. Almost all students in the study reported that doing research changed and enhanced their understanding and approaches to university learning .However, most students found it to be very challenging especially in the early stages. Still Healey (2005a) says that research-based learning project was presented to students as an experience of doing research, and the research activities and processes they undertook may have been more congruent with their common. 1 Place understandings of research as finding something out. The research activities in the case-study simulation involved students in applying knowledge derived from the lecturer’s research to construct their own solutions to a problem. This activity required that students understand research to include extending, reinterpreting or transforming knowledge.(Prosser and Trigwell 1999). Research is very challenging fo students and needs to be introduced in a way that builds their confidence and skills. Developing student’s conception of research is important so that they may understand that research provides the basis for the production and evolution of disciplinary knowledge as an area fo further investigation. Review of related literatures/studies MS Sumbawati and Y Anistyasari(2018)- Undergraduate students often have difficulty in finding the updated research topic for their undergraduate thesis. This clue to students have less familiar with scientific articles. Kerlinger(1973) - Stated that scientific research as “a systematic, controlled, emperial and critical investigation of hypottetical proposition about the presumed relation among natural phenomena. As Healey(2005a) - suggests, the greatest impacts on students learning and understandings of research a rose 2 from their experiences of doing research based learning project. Almost all students in the study reported that doing research changed and enhanced the knowledge. Lopatto(2009)The research community Every undergraduate researcher has a graduate, postdoc, or faculty supervisor functioning as a mentor, and some have more than one. Recent survey data indicate that about 66 percent of undergraduate researchers work primarily with faculty mentors, about 12 percent work primarily with graduate student mentors, 9 percent work with postdocs, and the rest work with other professionals such as industry researchers at a commercial or government site. Students at primarily undergraduate institutions are most likely to have faculty mentors. A great deal of responsibility is placed on the shoulders of the research mentor. Mentors are described as teachers, coaches, career advisers, and gatekeepers to the community of scholars. But does mentoring really matter? The SURE survey permits student respondents to evaluate their mentor. This evaluation may be correlated with other responses. In each year of SURE data, the report of learning gains correlates directly with the evaluation of the student’s mentor. The majority of the evaluations are positive, and over the last three years we have accumulated over 5,000 cases that permit a statistical 3 analysis. When we examine the students’ reported learning gains, we find a clear almost step-wise relation between the students’ opinion of the mentor and the pattern of student learning gains. Students who rated their supervisor as an “outstanding mentor” reported significantly higher gains than those who rated their supervisors “above average,” who in turn reported higher gains than students who rated their supervisors as “average,” and so on. As impressive as this pattern is, the quantitative approach does not capture the range of benefits of good mentoring. The social relationships among research group members have a strong impact on the undergraduate researcher’s plans for continuing her education in the research field. As one student wrote on her survey, “These interpersonal relationships are just as important to me as the research itself.” The observation occurred in the context of explaining that she was leaving her planned science career path because of poor mentoring. University of Skovde(2016) “Knowledge generated by research is the basis of sustainable development, which requires that knowledge be placed at the service of development, be converted into applications, and be shared to ensure widespread benefits,” says Mary-Louise Kearney, Director of the UNESCO Forum on 4 Higher Education, Research and Knowledge. Conceptual Framework/Theoretical Framework Research means to carefully analyze the problem or to do the detailed study of the specific problem,by making the special scientific methods. Research can be done on any topic,be if medical,non-medical,or anything else. In order to do a research, first of all you need to have a topic or the problem on which you can do research. The topic must have relevant questions to answer. Theorizing occurs on what he calls the context of discovery,a process in w/c the researcher gather preliminary data and thinks creatively about it. (The Art of Social Theory&2014). Concluded even carefully collected results can be misleading if the underlying context of assumption is wrong (1984). the conceptual framework of your study, the 5 system of concepts assumption, expectation Belief and theories that supports and informs your research is a key part of Your design. Paradigm of the study The researchers also provided paradigm to give data on the variables used in the study. INPUT Concept and PROCESS OUTPUT Analysis: Identified: Theories: 1.Impact of a 1. Importance of the Study In this study, some people can use this as their basis to their future researches and they can also use this research for their own purposes and can add some more knowledge about research. There will be some beneficiaries in our research: Students - Of course students will benefit because they can use our research to get some ideas to their future reseachers. Teachers - In our research, teacher can also benefit because, they can give some example and ideas to their students, teachers can also give some formats from our research. Teachers will also benefit because they will know if research is helpful to students or if it is necessary to give research to students, what are effects and how does it 7 affect the student to their other subjects or academic performances. Scope and limitation The study entitled “THE RELEVANCE OF STUDENT ABOUT RESEARCH AND THE EFFECTS OF HAVING A RESEARCH SUBJECT” focuses about how Research Paper is affecting the learner to their academical performances. The conducted research will be at Bct Plaza Natalia Baguio City and the participants will be both Grade 11 and 12 students of any strand who used to have Research in Daily Life subject. The reseacher consults their instructor specially reading & writing research in daily life teachers about their study. The research paper, impact of a research exploratory study 8 and the impact of Research-led Education on student learning.
