Topic: Purpose: Is Equality a Myth? To persuade Thesis Statement: In reality, equality is unsustainable, a myth designed to keep the peace among masses in all three political, social, and economic standpoints. If you were given the chance to design a perfect community, what would it be like? Ideally, and probably for most, it would be a place with no conflicts, equal opportunities, and unlimited happiness. There have been many attempts in creating utopias with those same characteristics, but how many of them really lasted? In reality, equality is unsustainable, and I might even go so far to say that it is just a myth designed to keep the peace among masses in all three political, social, and economic standpoints. From my readings, I learned that there are three types of equalities; political, social, and economic. These were made in place to eradicate the growing number of cases of discrimination in many parts of the world. One case would be the issue of gender equality in both political and social standpoints. The bible states that God made mankind equal and should be treated as such, however women have been deprived of rights and opportunities for the belief that their gender plays a specific role in Church, politics and the household. Even Pope Francis and Pope John Paul II agree that a woman cannot be ordained as priests, because her role as the “bride of Christ” cannot be fulfilled by a man. This is particularly prominent in Philippine politics where the view on women having positions is accepted, but the number of active women politicians does not reflect that. Another reason would be from the economic perspective, where in essence people have the same income or total wealth. In reality, people are unequal because we were all born under different circumstances, and distinctions it’s impossible to have total equality. Consider the prudent, hard-working man who spends his money wisely, versus the lazy, big spender; who do you think will accumulate more wealth? With all these cases, there is one similarity that proves equality is a myth. The fact that laws are passed to impose equality sends an underlying message that equality is not in the natural order of things. If a truly equal society were to exist, much of what makes us human will be lost. Our desire to be unique, our creativity, and drive will be non-existent, since every person can have exactly the same traits as you. I also think the only way to even get close to being economically equally would be to redistribute wealth equally by force, but wouldn’t that be going against the rights people have to their personal property? I believe the many attempts to equality just won’t last long in our system. Maybe in another time, on another world, inequality is non-existent, but right now, in our society we have to acknowledge that the opposite is just a myth. I. Introduction A. Review of Major Points: With all these cases, there is one similarity that proves equality is a myth. The fact that laws are passed to impose equality sends an underlying message that equality is not in the natural order of things. If a truly equal society were to exist, much of what makes us human will be lost.
