Windings
Definition of Windings | Chegg.com
Winding is the form of coil which made with conductor or wire. When the current flows in a coil, magnetic flux will be produced which
leads to establishment of magnetic field. The windings play a significant role to create the magnetic field in electrical machines
For example, consider an alternator (AC generator), in which windings are arranged in different slots to produce sinusoidal or
alternating emf. These windings are mainly classified as concentrated and distributed windings.
Concentrated winding:
In these windings, the coils are not distributed rather than they are concentrated at one particular slot. That is, the armature poles are
equals to the number of armature slots
Figure 1 is the single layer concentrated winding.
Figure 2 is the double layer concentrated windings.
The concentrated winding can induce maximum emf, but the nature emf is not exactly sinusoidal.
Distributed winding:
The distributed winding is the distribution of conductors each slot equally. The conductors are placed under several slots. The
distributed winding reduces the armature reaction and helps in better cooling. In these windings, the induced emf is less, but it is more
sinusoidal in nature than concentrated windings.
Windings are also classified as Lap and wave windings.
Lap Winding:
Figure 3 is the lap winding. In this winding, the conductors per pair of poles are in series connection. The armature conductor parallel
paths are equals to the number of poles.

Wave winding:
Figure 4 is the wave winding. The winding is in the form of continuous wave. In this, both front and back pitches are equal to the
number of conductors in each pole.
In wave winding, the number of armature paths is always equal to two. For optimal condition of machine, the double layer, distributed,
and fractional composite winding is preferred.
