GROUP NAME: ________________________________________LEVEL:______________________ Drop It Like It’s “Hot Spot” Objective: Relate hot spot with plate tectonics. Materials: • alcohol lamp • test tube • test tube holder • bond paper (2 sheets) • match • water Procedure: 1. Attach one end of the bond paper to the end of another bond paper. 2. Fill 3/4 of the test tube with water and heat it over an alcohol lamp. 3. While waiting for the water to boil, place the paper on top of the test tube. Be sure that the two are in contact. 4. Once the water starts boiling and fumes are coming out, hold the paper in the same position for the next 10 seconds. 5. After 10 seconds, move the bond paper very slowly and horizontally by 10 centimeters. See to it that the paper and test tube are still in contact. 6. Repeat step 5 after another 10 seconds and observe. Q36. What can you see on the surface of the bond paper? __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________. Q37. Let’s say that the paper represents the Earth’s crust; what do you think is represented by the water in the test tube? __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________. Q38. What geologic feature do you think will be formed at the surface of the crust? __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________. Q39. Which of the features, at the surface of the crust, will be the oldest? the youngest? Label these on your paper. __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________. __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________. Q40. Which of the features will be the most active? The least active? Label these on your paper. __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________. GROUP NAME: ________________________________________LEVEL:______________________ YoU can be Magnified! Q19. What kind of lenses are magnifying glasses? __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________. Q20. Where should a magnifying glass be placed to produce an enlarged and upright image, closer to the eye or nearer to the object? Why? __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________. GROUP NAME: ________________________________________LEVEL:______________________ Getting to Know Gases Materials : 3 rubber balloons of the same kind, digital balance and balloon pump (optional). 1. Measure the mass of the deflated balloon using a digital balance with a 0.01 precision (sensitive up to two decimal places). Inflate the balloon using a balloon pump and seal the opening by securely twisting/looping the end. 3. Measure the mass of the inflated balloon using a digital balance. Q1. Is the mass of the deflated balloon different from the mass of the inflated balloon? __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________. Q2. Which is heavier, the inflated or the deflated balloon? Why? __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________. Q3. What can you infer in this activity? __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________. GROUP NAME: ________________________________________LEVEL:______________________ ATOMS AND MOLECULES Materials: M&M, water, glass Procedure: 1. Pour enough room-temperature water into transparent glass so that water the water is deep enough to completely cover an M&M. 2. Once the water has settled, place M&M in the center of the glass. Be careful to keep the water and M&M as still as possible. Observe for a minute. Q1. How does M&M’s dissolve in the water? __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________. Q2. What will happen to the water? __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________. Q3. What will happen to the sugar coating of the M&M’s? __________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________.
