The 12th amendment was proposed by Congress on December 9th 1803, and was ratified on June 15th, 1804. Previous to the 12th amendment, two ballots were casted, each of them for a running President. The person who received the highest number of votes became President and the person that received the second highest number of votes became Vice President. This amendment separated the ballots so that instead of voting for a President with two ballots. Voters would instead vote for a President and a Vice President. This amendment still affects the country today because it insures that we as a country will have a President and a Vice President of the same Party. The 12th amendment was mainly proposed due to the complications of the election of 1800. When Thomas Jefferson President, and Aaron Burr Vice President were both elected, they clashed because of the different backrounds of parties that they had come from. Mainly the argument for the amendment was that party members didn’t want a President and Vice President from two different party’s to be elected because it created conflicts between them.
