Behaviorism (J. B. Watson)
„Give me a dozen healthy infants, well-formed,
and my own specified world to bring them up in
and I'll guarantee to take any one at random
and train him to become any type of specialist I
might select – doctor, lawyer, artist, merchantchief and, yes, even beggar-man and thief,
regardless of his talents, penchants, tendencies,
abilities, vocations, and race of his ancestors.“

Transactions
The unit of social intercourse is called a
transaction. If two or more people encounter
each other … sooner or later one of them will
speak, or give some indication of acknowledging
the presence of the others. This is called the
transactional stimulus. Another person will then
say or do something which is in some way
related to the stimulus and that is called the
transactional response.
12
Transactions
• Parallel (complementary) transactions
• Crossed transactions
• Ulterior (hidden) transactions

Jane is known as a really caring person who
takes on other people‘s hurts. She is
approached by Sally who tells her all about
Alice being nasty to her. Alice is seen as a high
flyer, and has just been appointed as a project
leader. Sally went to the post as well but did
not get it. On hearing Sally‘s story Jane
becomes concerned. She has known her for a
long time. She decides to go to see Alice to see
if she can support Sally. Alice is very annoyed
with Jane, she has no idea what she is talking
about and was not even in the office on the day
in question. It appears to her that Sally is trying
to set people against her.
