Natural Laws
Mankind can Achieve Perfection
Nursing is a Calling
Nursing is an Art and Science
Nursing is achieved through environmental alteration
Nursing requires a specific educational base
Nursing is distinct and separate from medicine
Nursing Theory Metaparadigm
“the nursing metaparadigm has been widely used to describe the four spheres
of nursing knowledge that reflect beliefs held by the profession about nursing’s
context and content. Historically, the metaparadigm has encompassed the four
concepts of person, environment, health, and nursing.”
(Schim, Benkert, Bell, Walker & Danford, 2007)
Four Metaparadigm Concepts
• Person- the recipients of nursing care including
individuals, families and communities
• Environment-surroundings of the person, setting
of nursing care, internal factors
• Health- the person’s state of well being
• Nursing- the actions in taking care of a patient
How Environmental Theory Incorporates
into the Metaparadigm Concepts
How does the Model Improve Nursing
Practice?
• Knowledge of environmental health concepts is essential
to nursing practice.
• This Principle guides nurses in their practice to use
products and practices that do not harm human health or
the environment and to take preventative actions.
• Healthy environments are sustained through
multidisciplinary collaborations.
• Patients are to be put in the best conditions for
nature to act on them. It is the responsibility of
the nurse to reduce noise, to relieve patients
anxieties and to help them sleep.
In todays nursing care process we use more
than one environment, which tells us there is
a direct correlation between theory and
practice. We have been able to implement
numerous interventions and care trends
which allow the patient to get healthier faster
and safer. We are promoters of health and in
a way we should be responsible for the
delivery of this health. Applying basic
environmental safety practices will only
create a safer place for our patient.
