Reviewer in Science EARTH”s NATURAL RESOURCES and ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY Three pillars of sustainability Mineral resources Energy resources Living resources Air Water Sunlight Soil Renewable Resources are resources that can be replaced by nature at a rate close to the rate at which they are used. THEY ALSO HAVE LESS OF AN IMPACT ON ENVIRONMENT AND PROMOTES SUSTAINABILITY Environmental cost is the term used for using resources with respect to the environment. Economic benefit is the term used for using resources that would be beneficial to the state of the people To preserve natural resources, economic benefit and environmental cost must be met. Sustainability is the ability to continue a defined behavior indefinitely. DENR (DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENT AND NATURAL RESOURCES) is the agency responsible for promoting awareness and regulation on the proper use of resources in the Philippines. The best way to describe sustainable development is the organizing principle for meeting human development goals while at the same time sustaining the ability of natural resources. The most environmental friendly action to do in most cases is the one that always benefits everyone. A statement that does not support sustainability is maximizing the present day benefits through increased resource consumption It is not true that sustainability has the main objective of purely focusing on the natural environment. The social pillar of sustainability refers to the sharing benefits fairly and equitably and respecting the quality of communities and of human rights. The economic pillar of sustainability refers to the practice that support long-term economic growth without negatively impacting social, environmental, and cultural aspects of the community. The government can mitigate the economic losses due to typhoon by building typhoonresistant bridges, school buildings and other public infrastructures. The government reduce the damage of storm surge by relocating residents away from the shoreline. Earth’s Atmosphere Global Warming is an increase in the Earth’s surface temperature caused by an increased of greenhouse gasses. It is caused by Greenhouse effect Greenhouse effect is the trapping of heat by the excessive release of gases in the atmosphere Effects of Greenhouse Gas Pollution or Global Warming • Water in the ocean expands • Changes in weather patterns • Flooding in lowlands and coastal areas • Ice in polar regions will begin to melt Greenhouse gases Water vapour Carbon dioxide Methane Ozone Hydroflourocarbons Chloroflourocarbons Nitrous oxide
