The completion of this project gives me Pleasure. I would like to show my gratitude to Mr Paula L Sovakiwai, (Computer Teacher) for giving me a good guideline for project throughout numerous consultations. Also I would like to thank my form mates and friends that have made valuable comment suggestions on this proposal which gave me an inspiration to improve my project. I would also like to expand my deepest gratitude to all those who have directly and indirectly guided me in writing this project. Many schools are currently have revamped and upgraded their computer lab provide a conducive teaching and learning environment for teachers and students as part of the Ministry of Education, Heritage and Arts (MOEHA) Education Reforms. In this project, I will be explaining the role of an IT Professional in relation to the designing of a school computer lab in identifying the network type that best suites the computer lab and the network topology that relates with the network type. The designing of the computer lab will include the structure of the lab, all connection devices, protocols, channels and what are their users. Nikeri Nataci Caucau Page 6 COMPUTER PROJECT 2017 ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITY A (n) IT Professional is someone responsible for the computers, networks, and software application that manage a company’s operation, track financial transactions, and enable people to communicate and collaborate throughout the company. Without a smooth flow of information through a company’s IT systems, operations would not be efficient or even possible some cases. IT managers need to monitor the day-to-day health of complex systems while simultaneously tracking innovations in technology that might create competitive advantages. The network type suitable for the school computer lab is LAN (Local Area Network). The network type is connected using nodes which are usually within the same room, offices, rooms within the same building and even homes. It can spread within a radius of one hundred meters from the main building. Steps to take in designing the lab: i. Identify the room for the lab – choosing a room that has plenty of evenly spaced to fit the number of computers you want to have in the lab ii. Determine the needs of the computer lab which will help you identify the type of equipment that you will need to provide iii. Consider the purchasing of printers, scanners, projectors, and internet modems/wireless routes iv. Identify how many computers are needed v. Evaluate furniture needs and options- consider the height of the desk that the computers are placed on is very important. The ideal desk height will allow users to type on the keyboard with their arms parallel to the desk, chair adjustable heights and comfortable for users vi. Choose a seating layout-up against the wall: all computers are facing the wall of the room. vii. Identify available power sources- all these computers are going to need to be plugged in. Use surge protectors to keep the computers from being damaged during power outage. viii. ix. Purchase new computers- from budgeted money Choose one operating system to use-Linux is an open-source free operating system that is a great option for a budget computer lab. Other operating systems include Microsoft Windows and Apple OS X. x. Install air condition, white board xi. Assemble and arrange furniture xii. Set up the computers and install antivirus programs in the individual computers xiii. Network the computers together xiv. Prevent trip hazards Nikeri Nataci Caucau Page 7 COMPUTER PROJECT 2017 NETWORK ARCHITECTURE Tree / Hierarchical Network Main server Office Principal P1 P2 C1 C2 Computer lab Printer C3 C4 KEY: P1- Principal’s printer C1- Principal’s computer P2-The office ladies printer: documents are printed C2- The office ladies computer: can send and receive emails from the teachers if they want to print out their paper work C3 & C4- Teachers computer- these computers can see all the work that is done by students at their individual computers - The computers that are in the computer lab for End-Users : if users want to print or send documents , they will have to send it first to the teachers computers, verified by the teacher then it can be sent to the office printer to be printed - Fiber- optic cable: the physical channel that transmits data from the user’s computers to the teachers then to the office printer. The Principal can send messages to the office and also to the computer lab if he wants to express his opinion or convey an important message Nikeri Nataci Caucau Page 8 COMPUTER PROJECT 2017 OUTCOME Advantages: Can be easily managed and maintained It is an extension of Star and Bus Topology, so in networks where these topologies can’t implemented individually for reasons related to scalability, Tree topology is the best alternative Disadvantages: Because of its basic structure, tree topology, relies heavily on the main bus cable, if it breaks whole network is crippled Scalability of the network depends on the type of cable used Nikeri Nataci Caucau Page 9 COMPUTER PROJECT 2017 CONCLUSION & RECOMMENDATION In short this project is how configure the network by complete understanding the tool. Main learning of this project was the role of a (n) IT Profession in designing or setting up a school computer lab and taking into consideration the suitable network type for the computer lab and a network topology that best relates to the network type considered and all devices used with channels and protocols that helps in the betterment of the set up. In addition to this project are the advantages and the disadvantages of the network type to the school. Networked computers present a more complex configuration than stand alone computers. A network involves two types of computers and a lot more peripherals and additional considerations. The two types of computers are Workstations and Servers. The workstations will be the computers that you will actually be working on. The server will maintain the data files centrally so that all of the workstations can access it.
