Steps
TEACHERS NOTE: be careful with the warm water;
do not use boiling water.
1. Make a hole in the top of each film canister.
2. Fill with warm water.
3. Measure the temperature of both canisters.
4. Put the tinfoil on the outside one of the film
canisters.
5. Wrap the bubble wrap around the tinfoil-covered
film canister.

What’s Happening?
The canister in the cup will stay warmer longer.
• Polystyrene cup
• Bubble wrap
• Tinfoil
• Two
thermometers
• Warm water

7. Measure the temperature every ten minutes for an
hour.
Scientific Principles
The covered canister stops heat transfer in several
ways. Convection is stopped as the canister is
sealed and stops the motion of the warm water.
Conduction is reduced with the use of polystyrene
and the bubble wrap as they are both insulators.
This also insulates the film canister. Radiation is
reduced because the tinfoil reflects it back into the
film canister.
