Extinction
Since the beginning of time some animals have appeared and then disappeared. This
process was slow and natural. However, in more recent times, man has contributed
greatly to the extinction of some animals. Some types of animals have become
endangered. There are three distinct ways in which man has helped cause animal
species to reduce in numbers.
One way is over-hunting and collecting. Since the beginning of time, man has used
animals for food, clothing and a number of other products. Elephants were hunted for their
tusks. People have even illegally collected some exotic animals as pets or to trade.

A second way animals have been threatened is by having their habitat changed. Animals
have been displaced by people building their homes in areas animals lived and roamed.
In Hawaii, certain kinds of home-creepers (birds) feed on the nectar of hibiscadelphus
flowers. Plant-eating animals have wiped out these plants. Now the birds are robbed of
their food supply.
Thirdly, the animals’ surroundings are being destroyed. The rainforests are of great
concern for scientists because they are disappearing. The trees are used for timber and
the land is farmed. Since the rainforests are believed to account for half of all the species
on Earth, this is a drastic threat to their survival.
