Name_____________________________________Per______Date_______ The Reproductive System By Jennifer Kenny 1 Human reproduction is the process of producing a new human being. This new human is created through the combining of a human sperm and egg. Let's take a closer look at the male's reproductive system. 2 The male reproductive system has two very important jobs. First of all, it produces sperm. Second of all, it delivers the sperm to the female reproductive system. 3 Sperm are produced in the male body in the testes. Men have two testes, which rest in the scrotum, a sac that hangs from the body. Each testis has tubes called seminiferous tubules where, beginning at puberty, several hundred million sperm are produced each day. The sperm are stored and mature in the epididymis. Another tube passes from each epididymis into the body. It is called a vas deferens. The sperm swim through this tube and mix with fluids from several glands, creating a mixture called semen. 4 In order for the sperm from the male to join with an egg from the female, the sperm has to leave the male body. In order to do that, the semen goes from the vas deferens into the urethra. The urethra in a male runs through his penis. The penis is a male organ that has two roles. It removes urine as part of the excretory system. In terms of the reproductive system, the penis's job is to release semen into the female's reproductive system during sexual intercourse. The two functions of the penis (urination and ejaculation) cannot occur at the same time. 1. Which is not a function of the male reproductive system? To produce sperm To produce eggs To deliver sperm to the female reproductive system 2. Several hundred million sperm are produced in the male reproductive system each minute. False True 3. Sperm mature and are stored in the _____________. Epididymis Semen Urethra 4. The fluid that contains sperm as it leaves the male body is called ___________. Amniotic fluid Penis Semen 5. The male body releases urine and semen at the same time. False True 6. Sequence the correct path of sperm through the male reproductive system. ______, ______, ______, ______ a. Urethra b. Let's take a closer look at the female portion of the reproductive system. 2 The female reproductive system has three very important jobs. It produces eggs. It nurtures fertilized eggs, and it gives birth. 3 Every female has two ovaries that produce eggs. Did you know that these two ovaries contain all of the eggs a female will ever have when she is born? That's usually around two million. The ovaries are found in the pelvic area between the hip bones. The ovaries also produce estrogen, a hormone that causes the reproductive organs to mature, and progesterone, another hormone that helps to regulate the system. 4 After a girl enters puberty, the eggs in the ovaries mature, usually one each month. An egg matures and becomes a large cell. During ovulation, the egg passes through the ovary wall into the fallopian tube. There is one fallopian tube leading from each ovary to an organ called the uterus. When a woman is pregnant, the baby grows in the uterus. 5 Each month, the uterine lining thickens in case of pregnancy. If a female has sexual intercourse that results in fertilization, the zygote embeds in this lining. After nine months, the baby is born by going from the uterus through the vagina. 6 The vagina has three roles. It receives sperm from the male during sexual intercourse. It is the part of the body where a baby can be delivered. It also allows the menstrual flow and urine to leave the body. Copyright © 2019 edHelper 1. The female reproductive organ that holds a 2.
