Basic Design Criteria for Precast Structures
1. Concrete compressive strength shall be 4,000 PSI minimum @ 28 days.
2. Lateral load design of substructure is based on AASHTO load factor design method.
3. Use a 30% impact factor for traffic loads per AASHTO.
4. Design substructure for HS 20-44 traffic wheel loads per AASHTO as last revised.
5. Design assumes that lateral soil pressure includes a 2' - 0" live load surcharge per
ASTM C857-92.
6. Yield strength of the reinforcing steel shall be 60,000 PSI Grade 60 and shall be in
accordance with ASTM A-615.
7. Design substructure in accordance with ACI 318-89, AASHTO fifteenth edition and
ASTM C 857-92 where applicable.

Software and Presentation Programs Available
3EB The program 3EB (Three Edge Bearing) is a
software demonstration that computes earth loads on
concrete pipe. 3EB analyzes underground pipelines
for standard installations, negative projecting
embankments, and jacked and tunneled pipe. Loads
are derived using the indirect design method which
relates the supporting strength strength of buried pipe
to the strength obtained in a three-edge bearing test
through the use of bedding factors. The program
analyzes all standard live loads, such as aircraft and
railroad loading and AASHTO highway loads.
Structural desigh is in accordance with AASHTO
standards and includes ultimate flexure, shear and
service crack control.
Standard Installations The latest in proper bedding
and backfill of reinforced concrete pipe. The new four
types of installations replace the old Marston Spangler
Class B, C, & D beddings that have been used since
the 1920's. The Standard installations have national
approval by ASCE and AASHTO. Emphasis is placed
on the versatility of the different beding types, to allow
deep burials of concrete pipe, as well as specifying
different types to suit job site conditions. Knowledge
of the Standard Installations is necessary to run the
3EB software.
LCA Least Cost Analysis software presentation
evaluates the costs associated with each alternate
pipe material based on design components and
project requirements. The program permits the
designer to preform multiple economic analysis to
compare different pipe materials based on total costs
over the life of the project. It incorporates project
design life, material service life, economic factors,
traffic costs and other project related items. Total
costs are calculated using present worth, annualized
costs or future value methods.
Boxcar Box Culvert Analysis and Reinforcing
Design is a FHWA software program demonstration
used in the structural analysis and design of precast
reinforced concrete box sections. BOXCAR
completes structural analysis for loads due to box
weight, soil weight, internal gravity fluid weight, live
loads and loads and user specified surcharge loads.
Installations for Rigid & Flexible Pipe This
presentation discusses the differences between
installing flexible and rigid pipe materials based on the
national specifications for all types of pipe materials.
Soil types and compaction requirements are discussed
in order for the designer to understand the preper way
to inspect the many types of bedding and backfill.
Cape Cost Analysis Pipe Envelope is a software tool
demonstration which contractors and designers may
use to determine the real cost of pipeline installation.
The program takes into account the many factors
which affect the cost of installation for both rigid and
flexible pipe: type of installation, and in-situ material,
haul costs, inspection costs, and trench parameters.

Glossary - Terms Applicable to Precast Drainage Structures
Hole:
The opening left in the wall of a structure for future installation of a pipe. This
opening is always larger than the pipe O.D. See table for standard hole sizes.
Also known as knock out or window.
Brick & Casting
Adjustment:
The combined height of the casting (cover or grate) and rows of brick at the top
of a structure. Also can be throat (inlet top section) height on structures.
Key Way:
The groove section of a tongue & groove joint between two parts of a structure.
Sump:
The part of a structure between the lowest pipe invert and the floor of the
structure. Also the height of this part of the structure, that is, the distance
between floor and lowest pipe invert in a structure.
Hole Raise:
Distance from floor to invert of the opening (hole) left for a pipe. Thus an 18"
dia. CMP pipe, at invert elevation 3.0, with floor elevation of 0.0 and hole dia.
of 24" has a hole raise of:
3.0 - 0.0 = 3.0' = 36"; 36" - [(24" - 18")] ÷ 2] = 33" = hole raise.
Wall Height:
The actual wall height from floor to top of concrete wall. Thus a 48" dia. manhole, RIM elev. of 7.3, floor elev. 0.0 has wall height of:
7.3 - 0.0 - (1.3' brick & casting allow.) = 6.0' = 72" = wall height.
Weep Hole:
An opening of diameter as dictated by the controlling authority, left in the floor of
drainage structures to permit draining of the sump area.

Design Red Lights (Project Check List)
1.
When specifying floor and invert elevations of a structure, check for sufficient wall height to take
the required holes. Thus one must subtract brick & casting allowance, top slab thickness, and
hole raise, if applicable.
2.
Look out for too much pipe into too small a structure. There may be very little support for the
top section when all the blank outs are removed . This is particularly critical when transporting
the structure and when CMP or HDPE is used.
3.
Try to put pipes into flat wall structures at as near 90 degrees to the wall as possible. Shallow
angles require large elliptical holes and weaken the wall.
4.
Try to maintain at least 2' of cover over your pipes. Less than this may put you into the throat
area, cause conflicts with castings, or cost your client more for high strength pipe. (Note that
these are only some of the problems.)
5.
Specify pipe material on your drawing. Hole sizes differ for the same pipe in different materials.
6.
Use standard structures wherever possible. They are far more economical.
7.
Where possible, use locally manufactured castings. They do not have high transportation costs
and long delivery times.

Pipe Half Angle Table
(Used with circular structures - see
"Half Angle Diagram" for illustration)
Example No. 1:
To find if a given structure will accomodate two pipes on approximately the
same level, whose size and centerline included angle is specified.
Given:
Procedure:
48" Dia manhole, 15" dia. CMP pipe, 24" dia. CMP pipe, 76 degree
included angle between pipe centerlines.
(1.) Turn to "Standard Hole Diameter Table" and find: 15" CMP
hole is 21" dia., and 24" CMP hole is 30" dia.
(2.) Turn to "Pipe Half Angle Table" and find:
(a.) Structure dia. on bottom row. (48")
(b.) Hole dia. of 30" at right side of table.
(c.) Read up and left to intersection finding half angle of 38.68
degrees.
(d.) Repeat procedure for 48" dia. structure & 21" dia. hole,
finding half angle of 25.94 degrees.
(e.) In bottom row below structure dia. find separation angle of
4.77 degrees.
(f.) Add angle found in steps - (c.), (d.) & (e.) giving result of
69.39 degrees.
Result:
69.39 degrees is the normal minimum angle between these pipes in
this structure. Since this angle is less than the 76 degrees specified;
the structure will readily accommodate the pipes in question.

Instructions & Examples for
Pipe Half Angle Table (cont.)
(Used with circular structures - see
"Half Angle Diagram" for illustration)
Example No. 2:
Find the minimum structure for the pipes of Example 1 on the previous page.
Given:
Round Structure desired for reasons of economy: Find minimum diameter
structure for 15" dia. CMP pipe, 24" dia. CMP pipe; 76 degree included
angle between pipe centerlines.
Procedure:
(1.) Hole Diameters are once again 21" & 30".
(2.) Try 42" dia. structure in "Pipe Half Angle Table".
(3.) Find half angles of:
45.58 deg. for 30" hole, 30.00 deg. for 21" hole, and
5.46 deg. for 42" dia. structure sepration angle.
(4.) Total angle is 81.04 deg., which is too large, however, pipe separation
angle of 5.46 deg. can be reduced to 0 deg., and the holes butted
together at the inside wall. This is not recommended practice, but is a
design option, thus the total included angle is 75.58 deg. This is less
than the 76 deg. specified, and the 42" round will just accommodate
the pipes in question.
Note:
Structure sizes can also be reduced by decreasing hole diameters. However, the
designer should be aware such procedures increase construction difficulties, may
violate local standards, and should be avoided if at all possible.

Maximum Pipe Angle Tables
Use with Square or Rectangular Structures
Instructions / Examples
Tables I and II on the following pages give the maximum angle at which a hole of
given diameter may enter the wall of a square or rectangular structure without cutting
into the corner area of the box. In the following discussion, refer to the "Pipe Angle
Diagram, Flat Wall Structures", and Tables I & II.
Table I gives angle values for situations where the pipe and hole centerline pass
through the center of the structure. The designer must exercise care in the use of
this table since it is restricted to those structures for which it was developed. See the
notes at the bottom of the "Pipe Angle Diagram" Sheet for a listing of these structures. The table values cover most structures commonly supplied by our firm.
To find the angle for a structure not covered in the table; use the formula for diameter
given at the top of the "Pipe Angle Diagram" sheet.
Example No. 1:
Ref: Table #1 on page 3.10
Given:
It is desired to put an 18" CMP pipe through the wide side of a
"C" (24" x 36") box at an angle of 15 degrees with the box centerline
and with the pipe centerline passing through the center of the
structure. Can this be done without cutting into the box corner?
Procedure:
(1.) Turn to "Standard Hole Diameter Table" and find: 18" CMP
hole is 24" dia.
(2.) Wall thickness for a "C" box is 8", so inside wall dimension over
wall thickness is 36" / 8".
(3.) Find 36" / 8" column in table 1 and 24" hole diameter row at
right side of table.
Result:
Read up and over to intersection; finding max. angle of 15.51 degrees.
Max. angle is greater than proposed angle, so we are OK.
Table II on page 3.85 gives angle values for situations where the pipe centerline meets a
wall centerline at the inside face of the wall. See lower diagram on the "Pipe Angle Diagram" sheet. Application is restricted to walls whose inside width and thickness are given
at the bottom of the table. For walls with other dimensions, use the formula for 0 found at
the bottom of the "Pipe Angle Diagram" page. Note that dimension "L" has no effect in this
instance so table values can be used for non-standard box lengths.
Procedure is as given in example #1. Note, however, that a jog is formed in the line when
using this system. As a practical matter, given sufficient distance between structures, this
jog can be eliminated by slightly angling the pipe in the hole. However, the designer
should consider this problem.

Most steel reinforcing designs in the precast industry use grade 40 rebar. The
yield strength of grade 40 rebar is 40,000 p.s.i. Steel cross sectional areas may
be reduced by using higher strength steels and still maintain equivalent yield
strengths.
The following chart has been developed to show equivalent yield strengths for
grade 40 rebar, and 65 k.s.i. welded wire mesh. The equivalent steel areas are
directly proportional to the yield strengths, therefore:
Grade 60 steel area = 40,000 / 60,000 x grade 40 steel area
65 k.s.i. welded wire mesh = 40,000 / 65,000 x grade 40 steel area

FULL FLOW CONSTANTS
for
Circular, Elliptical, Arch Pipes and Box Sections
Use of Tables
Substituting Different Products at Full Flow Conditions
Selection of pipe sizes for flows as determined by Manning's equation:
V = 1.486/n
●
R.66 S.5
●
Where; Q = A V
Substitute for V:
Q = A (1.486/n R.66 S.5)
Therefore: Q = K S.5
●
●
●
●
Example: Substitute a Box (or Boxes) for 2 - 30 inch Arch Pipes
K for 1 - 30 inch Arch Pipe = 368 (from table)
∴ K for 2 - 30 inch Arch Pipes = 736
K for equivalent Box Culvert; 4' x 2' Box = 743 (from table)
Therefore a single 4' x 2' Box Culvert (RCB) will substitute.
CMA - Corrugated Metal Arch - use n = 0.024 for 2 2/3 x 1/2 inch & 0.027 for 3 x 1 inch
CMP - Corrugated Metal Circular Pipe - use n = 0.024
RCA - Reinforced Concrete Arch - use n = 0.012
RCB - Reinforced Concrete Box Culvert - use n = 0.012
RCE - Reinforced Concrete Elliptical - use n = 0.012
RCP - Reinforced Concrete Circular Culvert - use n = 0.012
A = Cross sectional area
V = Velocity (fps)
Q = Flow (cuft/sec)
