Invertebrates vs
Vertebrates
z
What is a vertebrate?

Vertebrates are animals that have a spinal column and a skeleton
formed from bones.

The skeleton holds up and protects the body

There are 5 types of vertebrates

Fish

Amphibians

Reptiles

Birds

Mammals
z

Fish live in water and breathe through gills.

Their skin is covered in scales and they have fins to swim
1. Fish
z
2. Amphibians

Amphibians can live in water and on land

Their babies live in the water and breathe through gills

The adults breathe through lungs and through their skins
z

Reptiles live on land and some in water

They breathe through lungs

Their skin is covered in scales and some have a shell
3. Reptiles
z

They live on land and in the air

They breath through lungs

Have feathers and wings
4. Birds
z

A lot live on land, some in water

They breath through lungs

Their body is covered in skin and fur

Their babies feed on their mother’s milk
5. Mammals
z

Vertebrates are classified by

A) How they breathe:



How are they classified?
Some vertebrates breath oxygen from water through gills, others breathe air through
lungs. Amphibians can breathe through their skin
B) What they eat:

Carnivores – eat other animals

Herbivores – eat plants

Omnivores – eat both plants and animals
C) How they reproduce:

Most are oviparous (babies born from eggs laid by mother)

Some are viviparous (babies born alive from mother’s womb)
z

What is an invertebrate?
Invertebrates are animals that do not have a spinal column or a
skeleton made of bones.

Some examples of invertebrates are jellyfish, worms, molluscs, and
arthropods
z
Invertebrates

Most of the animals on The Earth are invertebrates, many of
them live in the sea and are very small

They have a soft body because they do not have skeletons.

Many have a shell or exoskeleton to protect their soft bodies

Classifying Invertebrates
Some breathe through their skin, others through gills and others through lungs
C) How they reproduce:

All invertebrates are oviparous

Offspring are called larva

Some change shape as they grow
