ASSIGNMENT 1 – INDIVIDUAL (25%) Interdisciplinary Curriculum INSTRUCTIONS: There are TWO parts in this assignment PART ONE – observation and interview These key competencies form the basis of the curriculum. They form the crucial foundation on which the key learning areas are built. Therefore the key competencies are cross cutting dimension in the curriculum, as all key learning areas work towards achieving the eight key competencies. Students are presented with various opportunities which challenge them to acquire these eight interrelated key competencies throughout their school life. Observe a teacher taking a normal lesson in a class. Find out whether the teacher included activities in the lesson that would include key competencies. What are those activities? Give a brief explanation. After observation, ask the teacher to show the lesson plan which she used to teach the observed lesson. Identify the key competencies mentioned in the lesson plan. Do you think the activities used by the teacher will help the students acquire key competencies mentioned in the lesson plan? Why? Interview the observed teachers and find out the teacher’s opinion about the key competencies being used in the lesson. In her opinion did he/she used activities that reflect those key competencies? Did you like her argument? Why? If you were the teacher, what type of activities would you include in the lesson to help the children to achieve those key competencies? Give your reasons. PART TWO – writing a lesson plan Make a lesson plan for a selected topic including activities that will help achieve the key competencies you have selected for the lesson.
